Ethical Reasoning There are a number of different types of ethical reasoning. If we think about the complexities of our decision-making process, it only makes sense that each of us grounds our thoughts and actions with different priorities in mind. For our purposes, we will be addressing five key concepts in the ethical reasoning realm. Below, you will find a synopsis of each type: Utilitarian Description – Ethical concept that deems the right course of action is the one that produces more good than bad for the majority involved. Cons - So long as a decision creates a benefit for most, Utilitarianism is not concerned with the minority. Example – I won the lottery. I wanted to take my family on a vacation. I allowed them to have input as to where they would like to go. The majority chose the Bahamas, while one member chose Alaska, as she doesn’t like the hot weather. We ended up going to the Bahamas, which most of us were happy with. Egoism Description – Ethical concept that deems the right course of action is the one that produces the greatest benefits for the individual. Cons – So long as a decision creates a benefit for the individual, Egoism is not concerned with the majority. Example –I decided to take a new job. My previous employment paid well, but I found the duties boring and tedious. I have a family of four who depends solely on my paycheck. The new job pays considerably less, but I am happier in my work. Deontology Description – Ethical concept that deems the right course of action is the one that adheres to the duty, law or rule. Cons – So long as a decision is made to adhere to duty, law, or rule, Deontology is not concerned with personal or social measures of morality. Example – I noticed my coworker, John, leaving work 30 minutes before we closed every day, while the rest us stayed until the end of our shift. John explained that he was a single father and needed to pick his children up from school, as there was no one else to help him. I reported John to my boss, as that is what we are told to do when a coworker is violating any of the policies in the employee handbook. Relativism Description - Ethical concept that deems the right course of action is relative to the norms of one's culture. That is, whether an action is right or wrong depends on the moral norms of the society in which it is practiced. Cons – So long as a decision is made to adhere to the culture’s norms, Relativism is not concerned with individual moral beliefs for the social norm. Example – I drive on the right side of the road in accordance with the law. I went to London and quickly realized that driving on the right side of the road was unacceptable and illegal. What was lawful in the United States was a violation in another country. Justice Description – Ethical concept that deems the right course of action is the one that treats everyone fairly unless there is a sufficient reason to treat anyone (or anything) unequally. Cons – The definitions of fairness are ...

First Writing Assignment Anthropology 100 Diamond, Jared The Third Chimpanzee Prologue, Chapters 1 and 2, and Epilogue Myths and storytelling are an integral part of the human experience. Remember that anthropologists use the term “myth” in a way that is different from common usage. When an anthropologist refers to a specific story as a “myth,” s/he does not mean that it is false. Anthropologists define myths as stories that have significant social meanings and often prescribe codes of correct, ethical behavior and/or prohibit incorrect, unethical acts. In other words, myths may or may not be “factual,” but they are always “true.” Truth and fact are two different concepts. The sentence “thou shalt not steal” is a truth because it prescribes a specific rule to live by, but it is not a “fact” because some people do steal. The sentence “theft and property crime declined by 7.2% over the past 30 years” is a “fact,” but not a “truth,” because it describes the way things are, but doesn’t offer any advice concerning what we should do about it. Science is often considered to be an “objective” exercise, and to a large extent this is correct. However, the information discovered by scientists can have “mythical” implications, just as much as any other information. Jared Diamond discusses many facts in The Third Chimpanzee, but he does not stop with simple description. Instead, he uses these facts to try to arrive at a number of ethical truths concerning how we should act. For your paper, read Diamond’s Prologue, Part One (Chapters 1 and 2), and Epilogue (Nothing Learned, and Everything Forgotten?) and look for the following themes: 1) Taxonomy: Classification is never “value free.” The way we organize our experiences into conceptual categories is influenced by the way we think the world should be. In turn, our classification systems influence the way we think things “really are.” What is Diamond’s opinion of the way humans, common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and bonobos (“pygmy chimps,” Pan paniscus) are classified? How should they be classified, according to Diamond? Is Diamond’s argument convincing? Why or why not? 2) Ethics: The way we treat others is, in part, influenced by how well we know them (or how well we think we know them). If chimpanzees were re-classified as members of our genus, would we treat them the same way as we do now (e.g. putting them in zoos, performing medical experiments on them, and destroying their habitat by deforestation)? If not, why not? 3) Speculation: A few million years ago, there were several species of large-brained, human-like creatures on earth, and as recently as 29,000 years ago, there were two (humans and neandertals). Today, there is only a single species of large-brained, bipedal hominid left on the planet. In your opinion, and based on your readings in Diamond and Kottak, and on lectures, what might modern life be like if there were two species of intelligent, cult.

Program code examples (known also as worked examples) play a crucial role in learning how to program. Instructors use examples extensively to demonstrate the semantics of the programming language being taught and to highlight the fundamental coding patterns. Programming textbooks allocate considerable space to present and explain code examples. To make the process of studying code examples more interactive, CS education researchers developed a range of tools to engage students in the study of code examples. These tools include codecasts (codemotion, codecast, elicasts), interactive example explorers (WebEx, PCEX), and tutoring systems (DeepTutor). An important component in all types of worked examples is code explanations associated with specific code lines or code chunks of an example. The explanations connect examples with general programming knowledge explaining the role and function of code fragments or their behavior. In textbooks, these explanations are usually presented as comments in the code or as explanations on the margins. The example explorer tools allow students to examine these explanations interactively. Tutoring systems, which engage students in explaining the code, use these model explanations to check student responses and provide scaffolding. In all these cases, to make a worked example re-usable beyond its presentation in a lecture, the explanations have to be authored by instructors or domain experts i.e., produced and integrated into a specific system. As the experience of the last 10 years demonstrated, these explanations are hard to obtain. Those already collected are usually “locked” in a specific example-focused system and can’t be reused. The purpose of this working group is to support broader re-used of worked examples augmented with explanations. Our current plan is to develop а standard approach to represent explained examples. This approach will enable an example created for any of the existing systems to be explored in a standard format and imported into any other example-focused system. We plan to follow a successful experience of the PEML working group focused on re-using programming exercises.
