Motive: Increase productivity and improve ways for efficient time management.
Task: Watching TV during dinner time.
Time Period: 26th
Dec to 4th
Jan
Overview:
Just like many of us, even I had that common practice of watching TV
while having food. Often described as family time yet the dinner time usually
flies as all of us sit together and stare at the LED screens in front of us. Though
being a usual thing in everybody’s regular life, watching TV has a lot of
disadvantages and it takes away a really lot of other good things that are coming
in the way. To list down a few,
The disadvantages of watching Television while having Food are,
• We often keep staring at the television with food drying in the plate.
• We tend to be more interested on Programs rather than on food.
• The food tends to be less interesting.
• Concentration on food turns to be less.
• Leads to choking at times.
• The time duration keeps increasing as we take minutes to chew food
between TV channels.
• Taste buds are not completely activated as mind concentrated on Visual
insight than taste nerves.
• Missing Family Time.
To avoid these and to concentrate more on productivity, I decided to quit
watching TV during dinner. On discussing these with my parents, they were
excited and decided the same. In this way, I decided to note the changes that
happen and the way the productivity improves. On maintaining a timer and
regulating the way it goes, the following changes were noted.
Routine before Implementation:
Dinner Time: 8pm to 9pm
Usually few mouthfuls are left over due to lack of interest and also
due to higher intake of water at interval during programs.
Changes after “No Television Dinner Time”:
Day 1 (Dec 26)
First day of implementation:
The task was quite boring and it felt somewhat empty losing the shows.
But eventually we started talking and the chat continued even after eating. Thus,
extending the dinner time until 9 pm.
Day 2 (Dec 27)
Discussion related to food prevailed. We could enjoy the food mostly and
family time was quite interesting and it also helped in strengthening the bonds.
Time 8 pm to 8:45 pm.
Day 3 (Dec 28)
Earlier Mom used to serve food. Now everybody took the responsibility to
serve food thus making dinner time a happy and cheerful one. Dinner Time: 8 pm
to 8:40 pm
Day 4 (Dec 29)
The food intake was little increased thus leaving the plate empty. Leftovers
weren’t found much. Time 8 pm to 8 40 pm.
Day 5 (Dec 30)
The time was utilised completely in enjoying the spices of the food. The
flavours of the food were more apparent. Time Taken 8 pm to 8 35 pm.
Day 6 (Dec 31)
Dinner time was completely utilised for dinner. Care was taken to not spill
the food and to consume each food item without wasting it. Time Taken: 8 pm to
8 35 pm.
Day 7 (Jan 1)
Speaking about important family matters helped a lot. We could also get to
know more about the taste preference of each of us. Time Taken: 8 pm to 8 30
pm.
Day 8 (Jan 2)
Understanding between people increased. Dinner time became a must-have
family time too. Time Taken: 8 pm to 8 30 pm.
Day 9 (Jan 3)
It became moreover as a routine to have things this way. We enjoyed a lot
and also, we could utilise time with much happiness. Time Taken: 8 pm to 8 25
pm.
Day 10 (Jan 4)
Tenth day of this implementation:
Today, Dinner time was spent with little of chit chats and lot of
consciousness in food. The food sounded delicious and also, we could experience
the full tummy and filled soul. The time taken was from 8 pm to 8 20 pm.
Summary:
By implementing and recording the results for the initial ten days, we could
apparently see the results. More than just improving productivity and analysing
just the technical advantages, we could also see the improvisation in the quality
aspects. The bonds between the family members improve as we get to know more
about each other and their day to day life challenges and experience. And what
more, the food becomes even more delicious when you completely indulge in it.
Apart from this the noted results with regard with our motive are,
• Food waste was reduced
• Time taken was gradually reduced. This reduction may even go higher if
we record for increased observation.
• Concentration in the activity increased thereby enriching the quality
aspects.
• Individual participation in the activity improved. Thus, improving
productivity.
• The aspect of material handling got improvised.
