IN CRISIS
I had one member of staff who refused to work from home, he said he could do nothing and still
get 80% of pay – apparently he told other members of staff this is what he would be doing.
Prior to lockdown, mechanisms were put in place to enable all staff to work from home, this
individual did not engage. All staff were given targets, I wanted to use this time to review
policies, procedures, risk management, business plans etc., making us stronger on our return.
This individual then started to say he couldn’t work without a computer, excuses that he would
not go and collect it as he was self-isolating.
Ultimately, I wrote to him, saying that he was not ‘furloughed’, as there is work he could be
doing from home and ask such, I would not be signing off his monthly pay.
Additionally, as he is one of my older members of staff, I suggested that he might want to look
into how not being paid might affect his pension.
Happy to say, he is now fully engaging.

Introspection Time
• What crisis are you right now or do you foresee that might
be important to your organization?
• What resources would it require?
• What is your budget for implementing this out?
• How can you progressively implement this change?
• What scenarios would force you to implement this change?
• Which friends/stakeholders/consultants can you
bring in to your decision making process?
• If you are not ready to implement this change now, what is
preventing you to create a contingency plan?​
