Current scenario of ship building
industry
Now Bangladesh earns around Tk 15 thousand
crores from the shipbuilding industry every year. So
far, ships worth about $200 million have been
exported, which will stand at $650 million in 2026. If
we can remove the barriers and exploit the potential,
then it is possible to earn 90 billion dollars from this
industry in 2040 to meet our own needs.At present,
Bangladesh has over 200 shipbuilding companyes
and the country has about 11 local shipyards with
the capacity to build international standard ships of
approximately 10,000 tonnes capacity.

Harmful effects on environment for ship building industry
Ships are responsible more than 18 percent of some air pollutants.
The activities in shipbuilding that are of highest direct
environmental concern include:
• Metal working activities, including thermal metal cutting, welding
and grinding.
• surface treatment operations, including abrasive blasting,
coating and painting
• Ship maintenance and repair activities causes air pollution, noise
pollution, Vessels discharge.
• It also causes port congestion and Marine species invasion
