 Egyptians were the first people unknowingly used SCP in the
evolution.
 The term SCP was coined by Carroll L. Wilson of Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT) in the year 1966.
 In those days, the product was used as feed for the cattles.
What is single cell protein?
 In short it is called as SCP (Single cell protein).
 In general algal cells are preferred for the production of SCP.
 SCP’s are known for protein values.
 SCP help us to escape from Kwoshiorkar (protein deficiency disease).
 Now a days yeast, bacteria and fungi are also being tried as SCP.
 The dried biomass of SCP contain 50 – 80% of proteins.
 Suitable for all age group.
 Rich in unsaturated fatty acids & rich in minerals like Zinc, iron,
manganese and calcium.
 Ex: Saccharomyces cereviceae
Dunaliella salina
• Marine ecosystem encompasses a huge variety of living
microscopic and macroscopic forms.
• Tetraselmis suecica, Isochrysis galbana, Dunaliella
tertiolecta and Chlorella stigmatophora are recommended
marine micro algae by Fabregas and Herrero, (1985).
Dunaliella salina
Dunaliella tertiolecta
 Since microbes are having short generation time it is easy to culture and mass
produce them in a short span of time.
 Since microbes are involved, they can be easily genetically manipulated in to
increase the protein composition.
 Microbes utilize simple raw materials (carbon and nitrogen) to grow for the
production of SCP.
 Since the substrates are simple, it doesn’t produce any toxic by products and hence
no serious pollutants will enter in to the ecosystem.
 SCP is not recommended for people with gout and kidney stone
problems.
 Some algal forms used in the production of SCP may contain high
concentration of nucleic acid which would bring out indigestion
problems.
 Under rare circumstances SCP could bring out hypersensitivity
problems due to the presence of toxic metabolites.
 Using wrongly identified species as SCP could bring several lethal
health issues.
 It is recommended for the people with diabetics.
 It reduce blood choleserol
 It reduce stress
 It also prevents the accumulation of cholesterol in blood vessels.
 Pigments from SCP can be used for the production of ammonia and
sulfur free biolipstiks.
 Used to produce facial creams.
Dig a shallow pit/construct a tank
Flood the pit with water
Inoculate the seed culture
PIT METHOD
Concrete tank
Cover the surface of the pit with cloth (to avoid the entry of mosquitoes)
In the presence of sunlight, the algal cells started to grow and multiply
In the beginning the algal cells are at the bottom, as days goes on the
cells started to float
This is the sign to understand that the cells are matured
Harvested, air dried, (quality checking) and marketing
