1. Target Audience Research:
The Children’s Music (film soundtrack) genre has a general target audience whom consist of
young children- with unisex songs so that the music appeals to all genders for a wide audience.
Unisex refers to things that are not gender-specific, being suitable for any gender. It can also
be another term for gender-blindness.
This is the general age for the target audience- 4-11. This means that the audience are at the
beginning of their education, from- foundation, infants, and juniors. The audience doesn’t go
below foundation, because despite children (pre- 4 years old) consuming children’s films
visually. As a majority, they won’t exchange with the audio as they’re not intellectual enough
yet. On the other hand, the audience as a majority won’t proceed into secondary school (Key
Stage 3) due to new environments, social pressures, and maturity.
Reception/Year R (age 4-5) – Foundation
Year 1 (age 5-6), Year 2 (age 6-7) - Key Stage 1
Year 3 (age 7-8), Year 4 (age 8-9), Year 5 (age 9-10), Year 6 (age 10-11) - Key Stage 2
Analysing my target audience by using demographics and the ABC1 social class scale, all
the target audience of the genre are categorised in ‘E’ as they are young children who are
not in work- and in full time education. However, looking at psychographic models such as
the ‘4C’s scale’ (Cross Cultural Consumer Characterization) it could make it much clearer to
find the target audience of the Children’s music genre.
Overall, I feel the target audience include 2 of the categories; The Mainstreamer, and The
Explorer. I chose the first category as it fits in with the mass appeal of the genre - they are in
the mainstream of society, as fictional children icons who perform the songs are the
mainstream in their society. Because of the mainstream impact that the characters and songs
have on the audience- it motivates them to ‘fit in’ and buy merchandise (clothes, toys etc.)
relating with everyone’s favourite character/film.
In contrast I feel that the other category of the target
audience is The Explorer’s, this is due to their age and
naivety, they are adventurous and energetic. Furthermore,
Children’s film soundtracks are a large influence in
society, as mostof songs from children’s films are positive.
So, positivity drives the audience, and this can be seen to
build the Explorer category to be adventurous like the iconic characters in their songs.
For example- Disney’s ‘Zootopia’ (2016), its soundtrack included an upbeat, positive song
called ‘Try Everything’, this positive message motivates the target audience to fit into the
Explorer category.
