3. INTRTODUCTION
The Industrial visit of 2018 took place in Sikkim, India
form 13th March. 112 students visited 4 pharmaceutical
plants viz, Cipla, Alkem, Lupin & STP Pharma in various groups
of 40-50 students. The accommodation of the students visiting
was organized in Gangtok and it was 2-3 hours journey each
day by bus to the industries those were set in Rangpo, Kumrek
etc. The students were advised to wear formals and the
college blazer. Inside the industries students only carried their
notepads and pens to take notes of wherever they were
seeding inside the industry. The companies would not allow
any bags, mobile phones or others electronics inside the
industries and strict checking was being done once you enter
the company primises. Inside the industry the students were
given a tour of various departments viz, Production unit,
Quality Controlo unit, Water treatment plant, Air Handling
unit etc. While entering into the Production unit the students
were aprons, disposable head masks and shoe caps so that
the contamination would stay minimal. After or before the
visit in various departments there would have been a
discussion session where all the queries of the students were
answered by the higher personals of the industry. It was truly
an exciting and enlightening visit for all the students.
4. DAY 1 : CIPLA
Cipla was founder by Khwaja Abdul Hamid as The Chemical,
Industrial & Pharmaceutical Laboratories in 1935 in Mumbai . In
1994, cipla lunched Deferiprone, the world’s rst oral iron
chllator. In 2001, cipla offered medicines for HIV treatment.
Cipla primarily develops medicines to treat respiratory,
cardiovascular disease, arthritis, diabetes, weight control &
depression and other medical conditions.
1. Sphrronizer - layering of pellets.
2. Octagonal blender - granule mixture.
3. Planeta 100 - Capsule lling machine. (1 lakh capsule/hr.)
4. Tablet granulator - FBE 500
5. AE 120 (1000l/500l) - used for Aerosol.
6. Neocota, Autocota - Coating Machines.
There are 4 section in QC, raw material section, instrument
section, nished product section, stability section.
The instruments used are :-
1. Dissolution test apparatus.
2. Disintegration Tube.
3. Tablet hardness Tester.
4. Friability tester.
5. Karl Fisher Moisture Titrator.
6. Melting Point Apparatus.
7. Leak Test Apparatus.
8. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (normal and
Reverse HPLC).
There are two units i.e., primary unit and secondary unit.
Before entering into these unit high speed air is passed so, that
the dust from the clothes get removed.
In primary unit aprons, head cover and one shoe cover is
used i.e., blue.

6. DAY 2 : ALKEM
Alkem was established in 1973 by Samprada Singh. It has
its headquater in Mumbai. In 2006 anti-infective drug Toxin of
Alkem. In 2007 the company led its rst ANDA for new drug
developed Amlodipine which was approved in 2009.
Formulation of dry powder injectables washing capacity of
viles - 300 viles/minute. Final wash water for Injection.
Drying is done by 3-4 heaters at 40 C. The capacity of 4
heater are 360 C, 370 C, 380 C, 385 C. Then it is followed by
crystalisation and depyuogenation. Sealing capacity 350 vilis/
minute. Filling capacity 250 viles/minutes. Upper labelling
capacity 280 viles/minutes.
Dry Syrup :-
Combo machines are used for mixing and drying.
Rotocon vaccum drying (RCVD) having capacity 1500l. In
syrup washing is done with air.
C-Block (Parenterals) :-
7. DAY 3 : LUPIN
Lupin was founded in 1968 by Desh Bandhu Gupta. Named
after the Lupin ower. Because of its inherent qualities and what
it personies and stands for. Lupin rst gained recognition when
it become one of the world’s largest manufactures of tuburculosis
drugs. It also has a global leadership position in the anti-TB and
cephaosporin segments.
Air is passed through 10µ lter, several type of coil are
present. Then it is passed through HEPA installed in different
chamber. The duct is covered with fail for insulation to adjust
temperature. EU 14th grade HEPA lter is used having 99.97%
purity.

8. Reverse osmosis chamber :-
In pre temperature plant, portable water moves to RO then
sedimentation takes place. Sodium hypochloride is used for the
treatment of portable water as softness (Sodium based). Then
ultra ltration takes place, then it goes to ozone generator to kill
the microbes, then it is collected in ozone tank. This tank is very
reactive & can corrode. So ozone has to be destroyed by UV. Then
it is passed through chemicals, Sodium metabisulphide, NaOH
and ADS. Then it is passed through RO and electron de-ionisation
unit to remove ions. Then it is stored in puried water storage.
Before distribution, it is passed through UV. Some water is
returned back to present stagnancy & maintained velocity of
1.2 m/sec.
9. DAY 3 : STP Pharma
It is a small scale pharma production company. They are mainly
preparing OSD and liquid syrup. Preparation of Gilintus syrup
was going on when we have entered into the liquid production
area. In the OSD production area when we had entered, the
production was stopped due end of the shift. We have seen
different tablet punching machine with 35 station. There were so
many other machines like grinder, Miller, mixer, separator, size
reduction, granulator. The most important thing is that we had
seen Fluidised Bed Drier. Also different quality control machines
for tablet and PAN coating spray type. At last blister packing
machine both ALU-ALU blister and transparent blisters we had
seen. There packaging and store .
