An impressionist music video uses seemingly unrelated shots to express the themes of the video and relate to the song's lyrics. Videos take the audience on a journey through different feelings and moods, like Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" which uses primary colors to portray blended characters fading into a wall. Interpretive videos directly reflect the song's lyrics through actions on screen without a deep narrative. Allusion videos imply something will happen but change at the end, surprising the audience, like Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" implying a love story but revealing the guy is gay. Surrealist videos are abstract and may not relate to the music, using live footage and animation for surreal
2. IMPRESSIONIST
• Making a fantasy
• Taking the audience from the reality
• Making them feelin certain way
An impressionist music video can be used to make the audience/ viewer feel a certain way and
will use seemingly unrelated, random and peculiarshots to express the
themes of the video. However the shots will often relate to the current lyric in the song when
the shot is shown. The shots could include people, scenic locations, everyday objects to more
obscure objects and abstract features.
e.g. The music video“ Somebody I used to know”
By Gotye where the use of primary colours to
portray moods and emotions, the characters
become blended into the wall of colour which
portrays the mood that the person is now
non-existent because they are "just somebody
that I used to know".
3. INTERPRETIVE
Audience Interpretive:
A music video can be interpreted by an audience. The audience will watch a
video and take their own meaningfrom it, depending on their opinions and
knowledge. It doesn’t have a set meaning or morale but the audience will interpret
whatever they think.
Production Interpretive:
An interpretive music video is a video in which the lyrics directly reflect what is
happening on screen. If a lyric is said in the song, it will usually be acted out
on screen. This is usually done in videos without narrative and can be effective if
the song either lacks deep meaning or is cheerful and doesn’t have a set
meaning to it.
4. ALLUSION, AN INDIRECT
OR PASSIVE REFERENCE
Audience is under allusion that something will happen but the story changesat the end
so its not as it first seemed. Allusions as a conventioncan refer to different
things. Firstly it refers to a music video alluding to an emotionor feeling in some way
through the video. An example of how this can occur is through the color grading of the footage.
e.g. “ Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen,
can be used as an example for allusion reference
As the story suddenly changes or an expected thing
happen in the end that the audience didn’t expected.
Like in the music video it seems like a love story
Between the girl and the guy next door but in the
end the guy turns out be gay.
5. SURREALIST
These music videos are very abstract,
and may or may not have a relationto
the music itself, these videos are very
artisticand creative and usually contain a
mixture of livefootageand animation
to add surreal effects or distortion. They appear
to be influence by visionsor dreams.
e.g. “Wide Awake” by Katy Perry
6. INTERTEXTUAL
Intertextuality in music videos, intertextuality is the way in which one media text is referred
in another.
e.g.Robbie Williams ‘You know me’• This video features the artist being taken to an ‘Alice in
wonderland’ style setting with Robbie Williams dressed up as the rabbit from the film. This creates
intertextuality between the film and his music video. • Also at the end of the video there is a shot of the
artist in the Metro-Goldwyn –Mayer trademark lion replaced with the rabbit character.
