3. ESTABLISHING GENRE
CHARACTERS, SETTING
AND TIME
In establishing an adventurous genre
the director has used that type of
music and setting to create mystery
as well as to create an adventure
genre, the quick movement of the
shots and the golden tickets put
inside the chocolate bar signify or
connotes that something is going to
happen . However the making of
chocolate signify happiness as
chocolate is loved by children and
gives pleasure which can establish a
comedy genre.
The film opening is for 4 minutes and
12 seconds. It was shooting at the
Pinewood studio in England. The
setting of the film opening is a factory
making Wonka chocolate bars. Only
one character is introduced in the
opening whose hand is only shown to
keep it audience a mystery .
4. The cinematographer has taken long shot and
extreme long shot to show the factory (the
main setting). A lot of ECU and close up shots
are taken to create the making of the
chocolate bar so intense and through different
camera angles such as eye level and high
level shot the cinematographer has given a bit
of 3D shots as in the viewers are standing in
the factory watching it pass through different
machinery. Then through the POV(point of
view) shot the director has introduced the
audience to a character but only his hands are
visible to the viewers.
5. The opening credits consist of an animated but also non animated
sequence of the production of the Wonka Chocolate Bars. It mostly consists
of follow shots to show the process how chocolate bar are being
manufactured and though not much video transitions are used only fade with
white transmission is used in the beginning . Whereas the music played in
the background is playing a big role in building up mood of the audience
and to create a hermeneutic codes and sense of mystery and excitement.
6. The sequence’s color scheme is kept really dull and mostly
grey, brown and red color is used. The mise en scene
props were for the majority black and white with the
exception of the chocolate, the golden tickets, Willy
Wonka’s gloves and the vans to drive the chocolate
away. The use of lighting is low key and therefore appears
more gothic looking and adds to the eerie feel of the
opening sequence. The scene with balloons floating down
which makes it look very calming which contrasts with the
tense music and gothic look of the sequence.
7. All the time the titles are placed
or shown in the middle of the
image or shot. The font of the
titles is capitalized and the
color used is golden yellow.
First the production companies
are introduced then the director
and then the main actor i.e.
Johnny Depp name coming in
the opening because of not just
its leading role but also for film
promoting purposes as Johnny
Depp is a well know famous
actor in the film industry.
8. The usage of snow outside of the factory makes it
look fantasy and dream-like adding to the idea that
this world is somewhere from a fantasy.
