OPENING
ESTABLISHMENT OF GENRE
The genre of flesh and bone is DRAMA and MYSTERY.This
genre is established through the colors and dim lighting
applying only red , brown and red colors to create a suspenseful
criteria in the opening credits with the addition of dramatic
music in the background. A lot of extreme close up are taken like
the shot of lighted match burning the cloth and ECU shots of
ballet shoes and thread and scissors. All these images are
signifying and connoting different emotions , discomfort and
distressing the viewers.Over all, the tension, external and
internal conflict shown through visual imagery establishes the
genre in the film.
CHARACTER, SETTING ANDTIME
The film opening of flesh and bone is for 1 min and 50 sec.The cast introduced in the film opening is
through titles and their name with different images in the background to connect it with the character
without using their face images as the director wanted to create mystery for the audience. The last but
not the least the setting of the opening is kept with a dark background with a dim light coming from a side
to show shady , depressing and unclear scenario.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
The cinematographer has used
Extreme close up and Big close
up shots like shot of hands ,
ballet shoes and thread sewing a
cloth to create an intense act and
for distressing the audience.
Superficially he has taken shots
in a way that the ballerina face
is hidden to create mystery and
suspense for the viewers by
taken bird eye view shots.
EDITING AND
SOUND
The song “Obsession” plays a key role in establishing
the genre and it also creates a suspicious and a puzzled
atmosphere for the viewers and the lyrics are outlining
and explaining the shots.
In editing the editor has used a lot of cut away shots like
in the scene the ballerina wears her ballet shoes. The
editor also used the associative montage to link the
different shots or images together to create a meaning.
MISE RN SCENE
This film opening is given a studio location with
mostly black background the back lighting used is
the fill light like the light coming from the window
and the other one which is presenting the ballet
dance, however mostly dim light is used. The colors
such as brown, white and light colors are used with
combination of red to make it look more fascinating
and creating a deep meaning of pain and obsession of
love. Although the costumes used is just the white
ballerina outfit and black long heel bottles.
TITLES
The tiles are used in every shot are at
different positioning and the names of
the cast and crew are edited in a bigger
font.
ENIGMA
"There's no balance," she sings on the redo, a finely juxtaposed
line against visuals of the crafting of ballet slippers and one
dancer's perfect form pile. It's an unsettling mix, which goes on to
hint at the show's themes of talent, competition, and, you
guessed it, obsession.
All the dance moves ,the red color and the skeleton editing they
all together are signifying the hard work, the obsession of ballet
and the desperate behavior
