“O you who have believed, indeed the polytheists (mushrikuun
- shirk) are unclean (najasun), so let them not approach al-
Masjid al-Haram after this, their [final] year…”
(Qur’an: Tawbah: 9:28)
40. ISTINJA’ & ISTIJMAR
❑ Istinja’ is to use running water to cleaning away of najasa after
defecating and urinating, and passing out any type of najasa
(including blood and certain types of discharge)
How to perform istinja’ (washing(
1. After relieving oneself, perform istibra’: try to push out the final
drops/ bits of najis
2. It is recommended to use a dry wipe (e.g. tissue paper, dry
stone) before washing.
3. When washing, use the left hand in cleansing and ensure the
removal of all traces of the najis.
41. ❑ It is obligatory (WAJIB) for male Muslim to be circumcised,
before which the uncircumcised male must ensure that when he
does the ISTINJA’ (after urination(, the foreskin is pull back to
expose the glans of the penis, to be cleanse thoroughly with
water.
ISTINJA’ & ISTIJMAR
42. ❑ If water is not available or cannot be used, then one may
perform istijmar: using a dry material that has friction and has
no value (e.g. not pages of a book of sacred knowledge) to wipe
the private area. This includes paper, smooth stone, leaf, etc.
❑ Note: Performing istijmar is the exception – preference must be
given to the using of water for istinja’.
ISTINJA’ & ISTIJMAR
43. Conditions for istijmar:
❑ It should be done when the najis is still fresh and wet.
❑ It should be done with a minimum of 3 clean wipes.
❑ It cannot be done if the najis has moved to another part of the
body from where it exited.
❑ It cannot be done if more than 2 types of najis have been
mixed together (e.g. from 2 different “holes” of the private
area).

51. HOW DOES A PERSON PERFORM THE
“WUDHU ” (ABLUTION)
DETAIL PERFORMANCE ACCORDING TO THE SUNNAH
e. There cannot be anything that would prevent the water from
touching the skin (e.g. nail polish, dough caught beneath
fingernails, etc.; but dry pen ink that cannot be washed away
is ok).
f. The skin should also be free from anything that would change
the water when it flows on the skin (e.g. moisturiser, cooking
oil or soap that were on the hands before taking wudhu’)
NOTE:
53. WHAT WILL NULLIFY A PERSON’S
“WUDHU’ ” (ABLUTION)
The following may cause wudhu’ to be nullified in which case,
wudhu’ has to be re-taken before one can perform Swolah:
1) When anything of any amount comes out from the private parts,
including anything that is
• visible or not (e.g. farts),
• najis or not (e.g. worms/ stones that come out from the anus),
• usual or unusual,
• Including tools/ probes e.g. inserted into the private areas and
then pulled out by doctors during check-ups
(Exceptions: air from the vagina & some types of vaginal discharge)
55. WHAT WILL NULLIFY A PERSON’S
“WUDHU’ ” (ABLUTION)
Important rule in Fiqh
Doubt cannot remove certainty.
If one is certain that he has not broken his wudhu’, then he is
on this “certain state” until he is certain that it has changed.
58. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a Muslim, or a believer, washes
his face (in the course of Wudu'), every sin which he committed with his
eyes, will be washed away from his face with water, or with the last
drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin which is committed
by his hands will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the
last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin his feet
committed will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop of
water; until he finally emerges cleansed of all his sins."

60. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever of you performs
Wudu' carefully and then affirms: 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha
illallahu Wahdahu la sharika Lahu, wa ash-hadu anna
Muhammadan 'abduhu wa Rasuluhu [I testify that there
so no true god except Allah Alone, Who has no partners
and that Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger],' the
eight gates of Jannah are opened for him. He may enter
through whichever of these gates he desires (to enter).“

64. WHEN IS ONE CONSIDERED TO BE
IN A STATE OF “JANABAH ” ?
1. Upon discharge/ ejaculation of mani during orgasm (whether
there is sexual penetration or not – e.g. after a wet dream)
2. After sexual penetration (even if it there is no orgasmic discharge)
3. When a Muslim dies (Except if he dies as a martyr, in which case
he is not bathed, and is buried as he died)
4. For women, menstruation
5. For women, giving birth (Even if it is just a lump of flesh any time
from 2 months onwards)
6. For women, post-natal bleeding (lochia)
68. HOW DOES A PERSON PERFORM THE
OBLIGATORY “GHUSL ” (BATH)
1( Remove all najis, urinate, then perform istinja’ (i.e. wash the genitals(
2( Perform full wudhu’
3( At the start of bath, ensure you formulate intention in your
in the language you understand, stipulating (the what & the why( for
example:
“I am doing this obligatory bath )ghusl’( for the sake of Allah!”
DETAILED: Sequential bath according to SunnahMETHOD # 1
71. HOW DOES A PERSON PERFORM THE
OBLIGATORY “GHUSL ” (BATH)
• Only obligatory ghusl can bring one out of the state of janabah
into ritual purity. Sunnah or any non-obligatory ghusl does not.
• E.g., one cannot pray the `Eid prayer just with performing sunnah
ghusl without wudhu’, unless one performed wudhu’ before
ghusl, like in Method 1, and did not touch their private parts with
their bare palms during ghusl.

1. Lack of water
2. Illness (e.g. bandage, severe wound, skin disease, etc.(
