The bedouin Arabs have said, “We are believers.” Tell them, “You are not
believers, but you should say that you are Muslims. In fact, belief has not yet
entered your hearts. If you obey God and His Messenger, nothing will be
reduced from your deeds. God is All-forgiving and All-merciful.”

There is a specific
meaning and definition
for both Islam and Imaan,
however they also share
a general definition and
meaning.
5. ISLAM AND IMAN
Sometimes these words can and are used
interchangeably in the Quran and hadith and
even in day to day talk - and this is permissible.

6. ISLAM AND IMAN
However they also have their own specific
meaning and this should not be confused with
the common day to day meaning.

7. DEFINITION OF ISLAM
• Islam = Basic “submission” or acceptance.
• Islam is the “simple” verbal declaration that is accomplished by the Shahadatayn (I
bear witness that there is no creature or entity worthy of worship except for Allah and I
bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger).
• By a person saying these two short lines, he is made pure and any relationship or
formal agreement that is permitted between two people who are Muslims (such as
marriage, eating the meat slaughtered by such a person, etc…) are all made lawful.

ْ
ال
8. DEFINITION OF IMAN
• Iman = Voluntary submission at a further level than “Islam” and complete
obedience to Allah and those things which are connected to Him such as the
prophetic mission of the Prophet, the Day of Judgment, the Heavenly books and
other (such) things.
• Not only does the person testify to the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of
His final emissary, Prophet Muhammad, he also acts according to all of the
injunctions that Allah commanded him to observe.

Imaan is the confession (by the tongue) and acting (according to
one’s responsibility); and Islam is confession (by the tongue) without
acting.

Imaan (means) to recognize this affair (Islam) and believe in this
(Wilaayah of the Ahlul Bayt); therefore, if a person testifies to this
(Islam) but does not recognize this issue (the Wilayah of the Ahlul
Bayt), then he is a Muslim and he is misguided.”

Through Islam, one’s blood will be sanctified; and through this (Islam), any
time a trust is given, it must be returned; and through this (Islam) intimate
relations are made permissible (marriage is permissible), however the
reward (from Allah) is limited to Imaan (true faith).

1. Don’t waste your time listening to slogans or statements of others. ( وِقالتعرابَالااّنآم )
2. We need to put an end to false claims and slogans. ( قللمتؤمنوا )
3. One must work to protect their own self and not worry about others. ( قولوامناَلسَا )
4. Islam is the outward manifestation, however Iman is related to the heart and is the inward
show of piety. ( فىقلوبكم )

5. When speaking with people who feel that they have reached to a stage in life (which they have
not yet), one must speak to them such that they do not end up giving up hope in reaching
what they desire. ( واّمللُخدَیاالیمانفىقلوبكم )
6. The way to reach to true Iman is through practical obedience, not just paying lip-service. ( لما
یدخلاالیمان...وانطیعواُتَِّللاورسوله )
7. Obedience of the Prophet is alongside obedience of Allah and this shows the perfect nature
of the Prophet that he must be obeyed no questions asked. ( انطیعواُتَِّللاورسوله )

8. Allah is Just and will not reduce the reward of the actions of a human being in the slightest
and as such, leaders in our society need to be the same – to respect everyone and ensure
that they are fair with everyone – not just family and friends. ( التكملَیمناعمالكمِشیئا )
9. Obedience to Allah and the Prophet is the way to receive forgiveness and mercy from the
Divine. ( تطیعوا...ِّانِّّللاغفوررحیم )
