Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Theory and Definitions
Oil and gas are significantly essential for the development of the nations, for they are vital sources
of energy where they are wholly immersed in our everyday lives. Oil and gas are used in different
types of aspects including transportation, heating systems, cosmetics, and office supplies. So, in
order to be able to efficiently extract crude oil whether offshore or onshore, different types of
drilling rigs are used. In 350 A.D., the first oil drilling rig was invented by the Chinese Circa
(Bohrmeister, 2017). Later on, drilling rigs advanced to the “Rotary Style”, the most common
method, after decades of the usage of the “Hammer Style” type of rigs (Bohrmeister, 2017). One
of the most common and frequent operation during drilling is tripping out. Tripping out is the
process of removing and pulling out sections of pipes or the drill strings. Moreover, this process
should be done carefully in order to prevent any mishap like a kick or blow-out which might
happen due well control problems. According to Jim in “Drilling and Casing Operations” (1982),
it is most probably for a blowout to happen during tripping operations. Pressure related problems
is the main cause for such problems during tripping operations, so a blowout prevention system
must be used. During tripping out, if the pressure caused by the mud is less than the pore pressure
leading to an influx. The report deals with tripping out’s procedures which should be done
accurately and carefully.
1.2 Objective: The purpose is to remove and pull out sections of pipes which might be worn-out
or broken for the sake of replacement or to install a bottom hole.

Chapter 2: Equipment Used
▪ Draw-work: It allows working with large and heavy equipment by providing a braking
system and a hoisting power
▪ Drill pipe: Hollow and thick-walled pipes which allows drilling fluid to pass through to
remove cutting and blockages. They are usually made from steel which is produced with
specific chemical and mechanical properties and characteristics to prevent any type of
failure like an excessive torque, and they are produced with various strengths and sizes
(Gvs, 2016).
▪ Dolly: provide the hoisting of the drill string up or down
▪ Slip: holds and grabs the drill string to allow tripping operations
▪ Elevator: a load-bearing ring that prevents the swinging of the drill string during tripping
operations, this ring can split (Schlumberger, 2020)
▪ Pipe Racker: A vital structure with a metal frame and wooden beams that ensure the
protection of the pipes, and it is used to hold and stores pipes (Petrogav International,
2020).
▪ Iron rough neck: A hydraulic machine which is a technological revolution in the oil field
industry, for it is able to perform one of the dangerous actions that was done manually
(Petrogav International, 2020). It can disconnect or connect pipe’s joints using torque.

Chapter 3: Procedures
▪ Look at the left screen and turn the “Driller mode” ON to be able to do tripping out
▪ Turn DW, draw-work, ON and confirm it to be able to control the movements of the dolly
▪ Press DW park OFF which will permit the movement of the dolly and confirm
▪ Look at the right screen and turn CCTV and “Derrick mode” ON
▪ Extend using the left stick to grab the pipe
▪ Double click on the right stick which opens the slips partially
▪ The slips are opened totally after hoisting up three pipes by the right stick
▪ Double click on the right stick to close the slips partially after making sure that the third
pipe is on equivalent level as the Iron Rough Neck, IRN.
▪ Then hoist the pipe downward a little bit to close the slips totally using the right stick, so
that the pipes weight will be handled by the slip
▪ Double clicking on the left stick to open the elevator
▪ Retract and hoist up the dolly using right stick
▪ Press on the “Assistance Driller Mode” until its green which is on the left screen
▪ Press PR, pipe racker
▪ After confirming it, make it be aimed at the well center by pressing WC
▪ Follow the instructions given on the PR screen until the instructions asks for you to break
out using an iron rough neck, IR.
▪ Look at the right screen
▪ Confirm the turning of IR Auto ON
▪ Then, aim the IR to WC by pressing the button ON.
6. 4
▪ Using the right stick move IR toward the pipe and press IR B/O.
▪ IR uses Torque to break out where upper tube will be grabbed by the upper part of the IR.
Similarly, lower part of the IR grabs the lower tube
▪ Using torque, pipes will be separated
▪ Moves the IR backward using right stick
▪ Continue to follow the instructions given on the left screen until “Tripping out” process is
completed and the pipes are in the ratholes or the pipe racker

Chapter 4: Conclusion
Drilling operations are significantly important to explore and produce oil and gas. A lot of
difficulties are faced during drilling due the ambiguity of the reactions of the drill strings with the
borehole formations and the presence of various geological features. These operations take a lot
of time and are expensive. Tripping out or removing a pipe string from the well is one of the most
common and frequent procedures done. Some problems can be faced due to the pipes’ speed during
pulling them out of the well leading to a pressure swab and decreasing the difference between the
pore and mud pressure (Kuswana et al., 2019). Tripping out should be done professionally,
precisely, and slowly to prevent suction force which leads to kick or a blowout.
