Depression
1. People try to lift the weight of feeling down and empty because of the belief that it is part
of the journey, life, which is full of gleeful moments and draining problems. However, that does
not denote treating the intense feelings of helplessness, anxiousness, guilt, unworthiness, and
sadness that linger for few weeks lightly, for they are not minor, trifling issues. This
psychological, universal issue is a mood-disorder which is commonly known as Major
Depressive Disorder. According to the World Health Organization (2017), 264 million people
were diagnosed with depression around the world. Also, the median age of this disorder is
between 18 and 25, 8.7% of the woman have depression, and 5.3% of men have depression
( Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Furthermore, 7.1% of adults in the United
States of America were diagnosed with depression in reference to National Survey of drug use
and health (2017). These statistics imply the fact that depression is a wide spread problem which
drastically affect one’s live. This mental illness which is due to certain reasons can be identified
by number of impactful symptoms which need to be treated.
Certain symptoms aid in helping professionals diagnose and assist individuals to further
understand this illness. Significant weight changes, loss of appetite, and feeling fatigued are
some of the symptoms (Smith et al., 2019). Furthermore, problems with sleeping, for instance
insomnia or oversleeping are additional signs (Smith et al., 2019). Headaches, back pain, and
troubles focusing are signs (Smith et al., 2019). Hopelessness, anger, worthlessness, and being
uninterested are common emotions that the patients face daily.
So, what are the reason behind distress and anxiety? The death of a loved one, divorce,
abusive relationship, unemployment, or financial difficulty are most occurring reasons. Also,
bulling whether it is cyber or face-to-face is one of the causes. In other words, any stressful
experience or memory that has severe consequences on one’s life can lead to depression.
2. Moreover, genetics play a vital role in increasing or reducing the chances of getting depression
(Smith et al., 2019).
These different, various causes can lead to serious harms. The negative view you have on
the world will lead you in making wrong and messed-up choices which deviate your life course
into becoming alcoholic, drug abuser, or a gambling addict. Furthermore, depression is directly
linked to suicide, for it is the main motive behind suicide. Robin Williams , a famous, comedic
Hollywood actor who starred in movies like Jumanji (1995) and Night in the Museum (2006),
committed suicide due to depression (Tohid,2016). He was someone who never failed to put a
smile on someone’s face, so the fact that he was depressed emphasizes that even if you are
smiling that does not mean you are not in pain. Thus, to save yourself the trouble of getting
locked up in the black hole of depression, you should not treat your illness casually and seek
therapy. However, many think that seeking a therapist is a shameful act, and that it identifies the
seeker as weak. However, professionals’ help will never demean a person as weak, for being
self-aware that you need help is admirable trait. Therapists aid in organizing negative thoughts,
coping with distress, and redirecting life in the right direction.
It is okay if you do not understand your feeling, but that does not mean you should
leave your anxiousness and emptiness untreated, for they are like littered pieces of a puzzle
where it takes time to know the place of each piece. So, even if you are feeling like you are
drowning with dimness all around, running breathlessly scared, and screaming loudly with no
one hearing a cry, you have to know that you are brave enough to start this battle ,and you are
strong enough to win it.
