2. INTRODUCTION
Violence is the use of physical force so as to
injure, abuse, damage, or destroy. violence often has
lifelong consequences for physical and mental health
and social functioning and can slow economic and social
development.

threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or
against a group or community, that either results in or ha
s a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychologi
cal harm, mal development or deprivation”.

5. TYPES OF VIOLENCE
• Self-directed violence
Self-directed violence is subdivided into suicidal
behaviour and self-abuse.
6. • Interpersonal violence
Interpersonal violence is divided into two subcateg
ories: Family and intimate partner violence – that is, violen
ce largely between family members and intimate partners,
usually, though not exclusively, taking place in the home. C
ommunity violence – violence between individuals who are
unrelated, and who may or may not know each other, gene
rally taking place outside the home.
7. • Collective violence
It is subdivided into structural violence and eco
nomic violence. Unlike the other two broad categories, t
he subcategories of collective violence suggest possibl
e motives for violence committed by larger groups of ind
ividuals or by states. Collective violence that is committ
ed to advance a particular social agenda includes, for e
xample, crimes of hate committed by organized groups,
terrorist acts and mob violence.

9. • PHYSICAL VIOLENCE
It occurs when someone uses a part of their body
or an object to control your actions.
• SEXUAL VIOLENCE
It occurs when someone forces you to take part in
sexual activity.
• EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE
It occurs when someone says or does something to
make you feel stupid or worthless.
10. • PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE
It occurs when someone uses threats and causes fear in you to gain contr
ol.
• SPIRITUAL VIOLENCE
It occurs when someone uses your religious or spiritual beliefs to manipula
te, dominate or control you.
• CULTURAL VIOLENCE
It occurs when you are harmed as a result of practices condoned by your c
ulture, religion or tradition.
