• Sex is the biological differences between males and females, which is
permanent & irreversible. Eg: Primary & secondary sex characteristics
• Gender is culturally & socially constructed differences between females &
males that are based on meanings, beliefs & practices that a group or society
associates with “femininity” or “masculinity”
• Gender roles are the rights, responsibilities, expectations, and relationships
of women & men in society
• Gendered division of labor – the process where productive tasks are
separated on the basis of gender

Patriarchy – a hierarchical system of social organization in which cultural,
political, and economic structures are controlled by men (old boys’
network)
For centuries, the differences between men and women have been
socially defined and distorted through a lens of sexism in which men
assumed superiority over women and maintained it through domination
