Overview
Rhyll Gardner is a management consultant with expertise across strategy and operations in financial services. Rhyll has 25
years of broad experience across banking and wealth management including retail banking, business banking, risk
management, strategy (including M&A), project management, sales and people management. Most recently Rhyll has
developed enhanced strategy formulation and execution skills with strategic leadership roles (including project
management), and having executed strategy in a wide variety of operational roles, she is familiar with the “villians on the
execution road” and how strategic intent can get lost in execution.
Rhyll has engaged closely with senior executives and boards through a distinguished executive career and has served on
several boards as a non-executive director. She is also an engaging and popular speaker on a variety of topics.
Project Roles
Bank of Queensland Limited, Retail Distribution Strategy. Led the development of a retail distribution strategy for the
bank. Segment evaluation and selection, informed by channel profitability analytics, was used to devise the best fit for the
bank across branch, franchise, digital/online and broker distribution channels.
St.George Bank Limited, Best Bank Project. A high performer seconded to a Working Team to re-engineer the bank.
>$100m in revenue opportunities were identified across retail banking, business banking and wealth management
St.George Bank Limited, Evaluation and Implementation of Value-at-Risk (VaR) System. The responsible manager
for the implementation of St.George’s first Value at Risk system and adjacent processes and procedures. The system was
subsequently accredited by APRA and minimised the capital allocation to traded market risk for the bank.
St.George Bank Limited, Implementation of ALM System. Implemented St.George’s first ALM measurement system
along with setting up the AL CO and Board Risk Management Committee.

Strategy Operations Roles
Bank of Queensland, Group Head of Strategy and M&A.
Established and led the strategic capability for BOQ including building a team, creating templates, process and disciplines
in the strategic space.
Developed a new framework to review strategy for the Executive Committee and the Board to increase engagement in the
strategic process through the whole year.
Established and ran a Digital/SMAC (Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud) Pilot to prove out application to the business,
educate and map the journey for the BOQ Group.
Led teams to investigate and evaluate merger and acquisition opportunities – capturing maximum value through an
understanding of debt and the identification of strategic opportunities to enhance corporate performance and led the
$400 Mill acquisition of Investec businesses in 2014 including valuation, due diligence, preparation of documentation and
board approval in conjunction with the equity raising
Westpac Banking Corporation, General Manager, Strategy (St.George)
Established the strategic capability for the bank to enable the division to function and compete for investment in the WBC
Group environment through targeted recruitment and the introduction of strategic disciplines in research, thought
leadership and presentation.
Built the project governance disciplines and practice for St.George in line with Group requirements by identifying gaps
between the business practices and best practice, managed the Project Management Office (PMO), and monitored
adherence to the governance standards.
Led the annual strategic planning and development process, review, communication and development to set the 3 year
strategy for the division.

Developed a turn-around strategy for an underperforming business to achieve a 17% productivity upflift over 12 months.
