5. Size
To design the size of cold storage
following things are to be
considered –
• Volume of product to store
• Volume required per product
container
• Space for mechanical or manual
operation
• Available site space
Shape
• Buildings should be made to
orient the longer walls facing
N-S direction
• W-E walls should have good
plantation
• Surface area to volume ratio –
less

6. Constructio
n
Floor
• A suitable concrete slab is
laid on polythene or other
sheet type of water barrier
over a layer of hard core.
• Underfloor ducts may need to
be insulated in the same way
as the foors, depending upon
overall design.
Roof
• Piched roofs are preferred
rather than flat roofs.
• Pitched roofs are built with
steel, timber or concrete
fames with purlins carrying
sheet materials such as steel,
asbestos or aluminium.
• Laps and joints at ridges,
verge and eaves be sealed
and bedded closely.
• Ventilation should be
provided.
Ceilings
• It is usually formed from
timber joints spanning
between chamber walls,
trusses or special steel and
timber beams.
• It is essential to design the
framework so as to
adequately accommodate the
loads to be applied and to
ensure a rigid ceiling.

8. Cold storage doors
• Doors are usually constructed with a core of
insulation material covered on both sides with good
and sheet metal and screwed to wooden
frames, the joint being sealed with a sealing
substance.
Insulation
• Insulating materials are incorporated to reduce
heat losses.
