This document summarizes a presentation on cancer immunotherapy given at the ETSTM-2017 National Conference organized by Ashoka Institute of Technology and Management. It discusses how immunotherapy uses the immune system to fight cancer, new tools and assays being developed for treatment and monitoring, and different immunotherapy approaches including vaccines, oncolytic viruses, T-cell therapy, and challenges in developing personalized vaccines. Potential side effects of immunotherapy like flu-like symptoms and skin reactions are also mentioned.

2. • A type of biological therapy that uses substances to
stimulate or suppress the immune system to help
the body fight against cancer, infection, and other
diseases is known as immunotherapy.
• Cancer can be defined as an uncontrolled growth
and proliferation of the cells of body.
• Cancer immunotherapy harnesses the patient’s
immune system to kill tumor cells and prevent
future relapse.

4. •Traditional preventive vaccines for cancers
caused by chronic viral infections, such as

•Now in today’s era many therapeutic
therapy are evolved such as oncolytic virus
therapy, t-cell therapy , dendritic cell
therapy etc.

5. • It uses genetically modified viruses to kill
cancerous cell.
• T-vec (Talimogene laherparepvec) modified
version of herpes simplex virus was first virus
used against melanoma.

7. • Characterizing the antigenic repertoire for each tumor
is a major challenge for developing personalized
vaccines.
• Most known and defined tumor antigens are self-
antigens, which include
(i) tissue differentiation antigens such as TRP-2
(ii) over expressed antigens such as surviving
(iii) cancer-testis antigens such as NY-ESO-1.

9. • Immunosuppressive drugs use to inhibit the activity of
current immune system.
• Types of immunosuppressive drugs:
 Glucocorticoids
 Cytostatics
 Antibodies
 Drugs acting on immunophilins

• Flu like symptom

• High or low blood pressure,
• Muscle aches,
• Shortness of breath (trouble breathing)
• Swelling of legs (edema)
• Sinus congestion
• Headaches
• Diarrhea, etc.

11. • Recent developments and clinical trials have
shown that immunotherapy may be promising and
effective for patients with cancers.
