Different people, Different goals
Income and Other goals
National Development
Comparing different countries & states
Income and Other criteria

Sustainability of Development
generate electricity but this might harm
some communities as they will be forced to
displace or as the land might submerge.
• Different people need different things. They seek the
things that are most important to them or that which can
fulfill their needs and desires.
• But some times these can lead to conflicts.
Eg: A girl may wish as much freedom as a boy and also
may expect him to do the household works as she does.
however, this may not be liked by her brother.
Eg: Industrialists might need to build more dams to
So, there are three
objectives of development
1) Different people can have different
developmental goals
2) What may be development for one
may not be development for the
other
3) Development for one people might
be even destructive for another
than income because
materials aren't just
enough to live.
•People desire:-
- Regular work
- Better wages
- Decent price for products that they produce.
• Thus, people in fact need more income.
•Besides income, they also need equality, freedom,
security, and respect from others.
• In some cases, these goals might be more important
•So other than materials like money that can
be measured, people also need certain other
things which cannot be measured but mean a
lot to life.
People look for a
mix of goals for
development
Developmental
goals aren't only
about income.
Hence,
we can
conclude
that
Can all the ideas be
considered equally
important?
How can decision be
taken if conflict
arises?
What would be fair
and just for all?
Is there a better way
of doing things?
Will the idea benefit a
large number of
people or only some?
Different people may have different as well as
conflicting notions of a country's development.
National
Development
involves
solving all
these
questions
When we compare different things, they could have
similarities as well as differences.
Usually, we take one or more important characteristics of
persons and compare them based on these characteristics
The criteria we use depends upon the purpose of
comparison
Thus, Income is considered to
be one of the most important
attributes for comparison
between different countries
Total Income
Average Income
Per capita Income
The Total Income of the country is the income
of all the residents of a country.
The total income of the country divided by the
total population gives the Average Income.
The Per capita income is the other name of
Average Income
Rich Countries
• Countries with per capita income of
US$ 12616 per annum and above
Low Income Countries
• Countries with per capita income of
US$ 1530 per annum or less
• When considering development people not only think of
better income but also other goals like security respect for
others, etc.
• Similarly, we think of many other equally important goals
besides income when thinking about a nation or region too.
Literacy
Rate
Infant
Mortality
Rate
Non
Attendance
Ratio
Are
some
of
these
goals
Money in our
pocket can’t
alone buy all the
services and
goods we may
need to live
We also need
services such as
healthcare,
electricity etc to
be provided by
someone
Government
takes this
responsibility to
provide such
public facilities
to the people
• These resources which gets
replenished easily by nature .
But using it at a rate faster than
it can replenish would lead to
over usage of the resource
Renewable
Resource
• These resources which gets
exhausted after years of use. We
have a fixed stock on earth
which cannot be replenished
Non
Renewable
Resource
Consequences of
environmental
degradation no
longer respect
national or state
boundaries
The future of
one and all is
linked together
Thus, steps for
conservation and
sustainable
development
should be taken
So, lets join our
hands together
to save our
nature for the
future along with
the development
of the nation.
