2. Edgar Albert Guest
• Edgar Albert Guest was born in
Birmingham, England on 20th August 1888.
• He was an American poet, who became
to be known as the People's Poet.
• In 1916 Guest published A Heap O'
Livin', a collection of verse that eventually
sold more than 1,000,000 copies.
• Guest's poem "It Couldn't Be Done" was
used in an Audi commercial.
• He died on 5th August, 1959 in Michigan,
United States.
• In this poem, Edgar A. Guest
speaks to young people. He challenges
them to look within and believe in
themselves. He explains that God has
given them all that they need to succeed.
4. About Poem : " Equipment "
• ‘Equipment’ by Edgar Guest is a five stanza poem. Each
stanza consists of six lines.
• Guest has also chosen to structure his stanzas with a
consistent rhyme scheme. It follows the pattern of
aabbccdd, alternating end sounds as the poet saw fit from
section to section.
• The poet’s tone is optimistic and encouraging,
his speaker creates an upbeat and empowering mood by
informing the intended listener they can achieve anything
the “great men” can.
5. Summary of poem " Equipment "
• This poem written to motivate the young people or the people who are
suffering in life to achieve their goals.
• In the very first stanza of the poem, the poet tries to motivate the listener
that by saying you have everything that the greatest man have , so start from
the top and say " I can"
• Later in the poem the poet says, you can be great only if you will. Here the
poet focuses on the will power, that a man should have.
• Following to this, the poet says, You are handicap you must know and god has
equipped you for life but he lets you decide. One should be self-aware and
not be proud in nature.
• Lastly the poet says, Courage should come from the soul within. Here the
poet focuses on self-motivation, that every great man should have.
• In the last line of the poem, Edgar says " Get hold of yourself and say ' I can ' .
The final words on closing the poem is to tell the listener to gain control of
yourself.
6. What we learn for the poem ?
• When we step forward with faith and conviction the
universe conspires to help you.
