Meaning of performance appraisal
 Assessment of current level of
performance of individual employee or of
position.
 In broad sense, PA is the measurement of
individual characteristics, current ability,
future potentialities and level of
achievement on assigned job.
 Under PA, job conditions, methods,
complexity, organizational process and
QWL are also measured.
Meaning…
 it is a process of evaluating employees
performance of a job in terms of its
requirements.
 PA focus on, “ What she/he does and what
potentialities does she/he possess.”
 PA is used for formulation of HR planning,
training and development, plans,
compensation determination, career
development, transformation, reward or
punishment, employee motivation,
succession planning, retirement etc.
