What is Supervision
– Supervision is made of two words.
means over and above.
means art of seeing objects,perceiving mental images,to
see the work of others.
, We can say that Supervision means overseeing job
consists of planning and allocation of work ,instruction the
subordinates and providing them direct and immediate guidance .
CHARACTERISTICS OF
SUPERVISION
 It is concerned with initiating action and
checking work while it is performed.
 It consists process which involve directing ,
instructing , guiding and inspiring the
subordinates .
 It is direct and immediate and involves face
to face contact between the superior and
the subordinates.
 It is a delegated function as the authority
to supervise is delegated by the higher level
.
Distinction Between
Direction And Supervision
Direction
 It is a wider term than
supervision. It includes all the
function that are necessary to
initiate action on the past of
subordinates.
 It is an important function at all
levels of management i..e top,
middle and bottom level.
 It doesn’t necessarily involves such

 It is process of direction includes
motivation ,communication and
leadership.
 It is more important activity at the
operating level of management.
 It involves face to face contact due
to direct and immediate control
and guidance.
NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF
SUPERVISION
Effective supervision is required at all levels of management .The need for proper
supervision arises because of the following :-
Issuing clear order and instruction
By issuing clear order and instruction ,supervision ensures that each subordinates
understand that he is precisely supposed to do and who is to do the same.
plan and organise the work effectively
For the smooth running and success of an enterprise supervision help in plan and
organise the work effectively so that subordinates easily done their work without
any frustration.
FEEDBACK AND GUIDANCE
It is necessary to continuously inform workers of their
performance to guide them about the action required to
improve their performance.
SUSTAINANCE OF INTEREST OF SUBORDINATES
It is also required to sustain interest of subordinates in the
work and to maintain discipline among them.
continuously reminding to workers
It is also needed to remind workers continuously about the
performance levels expected of them because ,in general ,
workers lack of sense of direction and purpose.

The Importance of supervision
can be well realised from the
function performed by a
supervisor and the position he
enjoys in the organisation set
up.
He is the key person who
provides the necessary link
between the top management
and the workers.
IMPORTANCE OF
SUPERVISION
Supervisor maintains the healthy industrial relation by play both
role.
As the representative of management :-He explained the ideas
,plans , thoughts and desires of the management to the operative workers
As the representative of workers :-He brings the complaints
,suggestions ,difficulties ,idea and inventions of the workers to the notice of the
management.
A supervisor holds the key to human relations not only at the operative
level but for the organisation as a whole . And the success of an enterprise
depend on effective supervision.
It has been rightly said ,“ Supervision is the ignition key that starts the
engine of the enterprise and keeps the managerial train into motion”
POSITION OF SUPERVISOR
SUPERVISOR’S POSITION may vary from
enterprise to enterprise .But he plays an
important role in all organisation and is a
necessary link between the management
and the workers.
In earlier times , when staffing was not
regarded as a separate management
function ,supervisor used to perform all
personnel functions like recruitment
,selection , training and compensation of
workers.
Supervision still remain an essential
function of directing .
