4. MTV (MusicTele-Vision) is an American pay television channel that
serves as the flagship property of ownerViacom Media Networks (a
division ofViacom)
The channel was launched on August 1, 1981,and originally aired music
videos as guided by television personalities known as "video jockeys"
(VJs)
From a business perspective, this was a very profitable move, since the
channel had all its content paid by for the artists/record labels and
charged them for air time at advertising fees. So basically, MTV was an
adverts channel devised to promote music products.
MTV has struggled with the secular decline of music-related
subscription-based media. Its ratings have been said to be failing
systematically, as younger viewers increasingly shift towards other
media platforms, with yearly ratings drops as high as 29%; thus there
was doubt of the lasting relevance of MTV towards young audiences.
Since its inception, MTV has toned down its music video programming
significantly, and its programming now consists mainly of
original reality, comedy and drama programming and some off-
network syndicated programs and films, with limited music video
programming in off-peak time periods.
5. The advent of Web 2.0 and the increase of bandwidth (the amount of
data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time) made possible
the launch of online video platforms such asVimeo (2004), Daily Motion
(2005) andYouTube (2005)
6. Vevo (an abbreviation for 'video evolution') is an American multinational video hosting
service founded on December 8, 2009, as a joint venture among three major record
companies: Universal Music Group (UMG), Sony Music Entertainment (SME) and EMI. In
August 2016, Warner Music Group (WMG), the third-largest record company, agreed to
license premium videos from its artists ontoVevo.
Vevo only hosts music videos from both Universal Music Group and Sony Music
Entertainment, syndicated onYouTube and its app, and the advertising revenue is shared
by Google and Vevo.
On May 24, 2018, Vevo announced that it was shutting down its consumer website and
removing its app from mobile phone platforms.Vevo distributes viaYouTube, while its app is
