2. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of
matter )
How do we describe Matter?
•
is any thing that takes up space
and has mass.
you are made of matter, your
book, pencil, anything you can
name is made of matter.

I will be able to know:
1-Explore and observe
matter .
2-Define the terms
matter and mass.
3-Describe matter by

4. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of
matter )
The world is full of many kinds of
matter.
How can we tell about them??
Matter can be described by its
properties.
a characteristic of matter that
you can observe.

5. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of
matter )
Some properties you can observe
by your sense of sight:
Color, shape, size.
You can also observe texture and
luster.
How an object feels.
How an object shines in light.

object:

Volume and Mass
•
Is how much space an object
takes up.
Ex. the beach ball has greater
volume than the bowling ball.

3-Describe matter by
its observable

7
volume
8. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of
matter )
Is how much matter is in an
object.
Object with large mass feels
heavy.
Object with small mass feels light.
However the bowling ball has more
mass than beach ball.

9. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of

How do we measure Mass and
Volume?
Large objects don’t always have
more mass than small objects.
the bowling ball has more mass
than beach ball?
Matter is made of very tiny
particles.
In some objects the particles are
close together.
In other objects they are farther
apart.

10. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of
matter )
the particles in bowling ball are
packed together tightly.
They are packed more than the
beach ball.

10
11. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of
matter )
Matter with tightly packed
particles are called dense matter
Matter that is dense usually sink
in water.
Matter that is less dense will
float.

12. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of
matter )
To measure mass we use unit
called gram.
1 gram = the mass of 2 paper clips.
We can use g to stand for the
word gram.
To measure the more massive
objects we can use kilogram
Kilogram=1000 gram
To measure volume we use liter
We can use L to stand for the
word liter.

13. Ch. 11 , Lesson 1
( properties of

How are Mass and Weight
related?
The more mass an object has, the
more it weights.
If you visit the moon your mass
will stay the same (the matter
inside you wouldn’t change)
However, you will weight much less
(weight depends on gravity)
Weight is the pull of gravity
between you and Earth.
The pull of gravity on Moon is
weaker.
