Harris began learning the theories of
Transactional Analysis around 1960 directly
from the creator of Transactional Analysis, Dr.
Eric Berne MD.
Harris observed the runaway success Dr. Berne
achieved with Games People Play in 1964.
Despite the numerous literary accomplishments
of Games, Harris felt that he could simplify
Berne’s theories even more and make them
more accessible to a wider audience.

7. I'm OK, You're OK, by Thomas A Harris MD, is
one of the best selling self-help books ever
published.
It is a practical guide to Transactional Analysis as
a method for solving problems in life.
From its first publication during 1967, the
popularity of I'm OK, You're OK gradually
increased until, during 1972, its name made the
New York Times Best Seller list and remained
there for almost two years.
It is estimated by the publisher to have sold over
15 million copies to date and to have been
translated into over a dozen languages.
8. Purpose
I’m OK – You’re OK is based on the theories of
Transactional Analysis developed by Dr. Eric Berne
in the bestseller Games People Play in 1964.
Harris wrote that most people live out their lives in
the negative “I’m Not OK – You’re OK” state,
leading to dysfunctional emotional reactions towards
the people around you.
Harris defines this and other states and gives sound
advice to allow all people to adopt the ideal “I’m OK
– You’re OK” mindset.
For Harris, being OK with yourself and with others is
the way to happiness, personal satisfaction, and good
relationships.

According to the International Transactional
Analysis Association, A 'is a theory of
personality and a systematic psychotherapy for
personal growth and personal change‘ In
1. addition to defining transactions as the
fundamental unit of social intercourse,
Berne also went on to define 3 ego
states: Parent, Adult, and Child. But
unlike Freud’s ego states, which were
more “concepts”, Berne’s ego states
could be seen with observable behaviors.
11. Harris summarized the three ego states in I’m
OK – You’re OK as:
Parent – taught concept
Child – felt concept
Adult – learned concept
The Parent, Adult, Child (P-A-C) Model
12. 2. The phrase I'm OK, You're OK is one of four
"life positions" that each of us may take. The
four positions are:
a) I'm Not OK, You're OK
b) I'm Not OK, You're Not OK
c) I'm OK, You're Not OK
d) I'm OK, You're OK
13. a) I'm OK and you are not OK. In this
position I feel good about myself but I see
others as damaged or less than and it is
usually not healthy,
b) I'm not OK and you are OK. In this
position the person sees him/herself as the
weak partner in relationships as the others
in life are definitely better than the self.
The person who holds this position will
unconsciously accept abuse as OK.
14. c) I'm not OK and you are not OK. This is the
worst position to be in as it means that I
believe that I am in a terrible state and the
rest of the world is as bad. Consequently
there is no hope for any ultimate supports.
d) I'm OK and you are OK. This is the
healthiest position about life and it means
that I feel good about myself and that I feel
good about others and their competence.
15. Transactional Analysis is method of dealing
with behavioral disorders
Developed by Eric Berne who believed that
the majority of our life experiences are
recorded in our subconscious minds in an
unaltered fashion and become a part of the way
we behave
–The behavior is subconsciously designed to
get reactions and determine how others feel
about us.
16. 3. It is a theory of communication that can be
extended to the analysis of systems and
organisations.
4. It offers a theory for child development by
explaining how our adult patterns of life
originated in childhood. This explanation is
based on the idea of a "Life (or Childhood)
Script": the assumption that we continue to
re-play childhood strategies, even when this
results in pain or defeat. Thus it claims to
offer a theory of psychopathology.
17. 5. In practical application, it can be used in the
diagnosis and treatment of many types of
psychological disorders and provides a
method of therapy for individuals, couples,
families and groups.
6. Outside the therapeutic field, it has been used
in education to help teachers remain in clear
communication at an appropriate level, in
counselling and consultancy, in management
and communications training and by other
bodies.
18. 7. Pain, Boredom, Wanting comes first, Get

to use time are described in this Novel.

19. 1967 vs. 1969 Publication Date
There is considerable contradictory information
on the internet regarding the publication date
of I’m OK – You’re OK.
Many sources cite 1967 which is incorrect. It
was published in 1969.
This is based upon these facts:
- A 1972 article in the New York Times which
states the publication date of April 1969.
-The Preface in the original first hardcover
edition which Dr. Thomas A. Harris personally
signs is dated June 1968.
20. - There is no way the book could be published
in 1967 if the Preface is dated 1968,
-The original copyright states 1967, 1968, and
1969. Harris began work on I’m OK – You’re
OK in 1967.
This is why it is sometimes confused. But the
publication was 1969.
