2. Democracy is changing
• Power structures and inequality influence the democratic game
• Difference between the elite and the
• People are cross-ideological
• Which is often being confused with ‘non-political’
• But may better be understood as ‘concrete’
• Deliberative democracy is increasingly seen as one answer
• Engagement in RRI should be seen in this larger picture

3. “Compliance” is changing
• Traditionally legal compliance was enough
• Then ‘ethical compliance’ was added – but elite based
• Social compliance goes further
• Looks into the preferred, pre-emptive/proactive futures
• And who can define those?
• Engagement in CSR has been industry’s way
• Engagement in RRI should be seen in this larger picture

9. Status of engagement in STI
• Methods are there. Except for online/blended.
• Very different amounts of experience on different complexity levels
• Policy level – TA, Foresight for many years
• Programme definition – stakeholders, but not citizens/users/etc
• Science steering – Science Shops. Else no real practice.
• Citizen engagement in science execution – action research. To some extend
Citizen Science.
• Risk of making RRI un-political by focusing on the non-dangerous
engagement practices
• Then the democratic and compliance aspects will be missed
