STUDENT MOBILITY AND
TRANSNATIONAL EDUCATION
The U.S. is and, for a long time, has been the top
destination of internationally mobile students
worldwide. Far fewer U.S. students go abroad for
their education- either for a degree or short-term
credit-though the number of such students has
increased steadily over time.

1. Every word is a member of a category( e.g., Noun, Verb,
etc.)
2. A phrase is a string words ( one or more) that functions as
a unit in a sentence. A phrase is built up around a single
word, called its head.
3. In a language, there is a set of specific ways in which
phrases can be combined with one another to construct
bigger phrases and sentences. These are called phrase
structure rules of the language
4. The way in which phrases are combined in
a sentence determines its prhase structure.
When you have
appropriate combination
of an NP and a VP, you
from a sentence.
1. Nalipat ni Mina
magkaon sang iya nga
balon.
2. Ang akon tuod
nga si Mina
mahinay magkaon
sang pamahaw.
3. Naliptan si
Mina sang iya
mga classmates sa
ila eskwelahan.
4. Ang bangko
ni Mina iya
ginduagan sang
pula.
S stands for sentence; NP for noun
phrase; and VP for verb phrase. The
rules will generate sentences such as:
1.Sally likes cooking.
NP VP
2.The dogs were barking last night.
NP VP
However, other languages may have their own rules.
For example, in the Hiligaynon language, the VP comes
before the NP. Examine these sentences.
Nagahampang ang mga bata.(The children went out
playing)
VP NP
Mabugana ang panggas sang humay kanday Lolo Riko.
VP NP
(Lolo Riko’s harvest of crops are abundant. )
Conjunction
Words and phrases of the same category can be combined
using conjunctions such as and and or to form larger phrases. Those
are called ‘conjoined’ phrases.
Examples:
1.Mary and Martha are sisters.(Conjoined NP’s)
Si Mary kag si Martha mag utod.
2. I like to jog and swim. (conjoined VPs)
Nanamian ako mag dalagan kag maglangoy.
3. Mother cooked lunch and we cleaned the house.(conjoined
verbs)
Naguto si nanay sang panyaga kag naninlo kami sa amon balay.
The use of language is limitless. The phrase
structure rules do not limit the structures but
rather make possible all the grammatical
combinations that can be done with phrases, i.
e., noun phrases, verb phrases, prepositional
phrases, and so on. Most sentences in English
can be diagrammed using the phrase tree.
Examine the following basic structures.
