Animals biological, psychological,
sociological requirements are
extremely important for their
welfare and conservation
Biological requirements
▪ Design of their body (limbs)
▪ Food habit and variety
(pangolin, elephant)
▪ Living atmosphere
(arboreal, predominantly water,
ice, land)
▪ Circadian rhythm (nocturnal)
▪ Reproduction
▪ Clean Water for drinking
▪ Clean water for bathing
▪ Sleep
▪ Hunting /grazing /browsing
▪ Exercise
▪ Special requirements
(hibernation, nest building,
body dusting for removing
parasites, stones for
digestion)
Psychological & Sociological requirements
▪ Family structure (Group /
Solitary)
▪ Group Hierarchy
▪ Choosing a mate
▪ Protecting the young ones
▪ Type of home
(Den/Burrow/Nest/ Tree hole)
▪ Cleanliness
▪ Fearless life
▪ Marking territory
▪ Opportunity to exhibit normal
behavior (circus, races)
▪ Species protocol (lion)
Circus Animals
Animals exhibited in public
places
Zoo policy of India
“To inspire amongst zoo visitors
empathy for wild animals, an
understanding and awareness
about the need for conservation of
natural resources and for
maintaining the ecological
balance.”
Inappropriate living conditions
Cleanliness
What kind of medical
treatment facilities are
available?
How youth grow by seeing
such zoos?
Tyke – Symbol of all abused
and suffering captive animals
Tyke was a an
abused circus
elephant that
was shot 86
times and killed,
while it tried to
escape from a
circus in Hawaii,
USA in 1994
What you can do to eliminate captive animals ?
First step: Start deeply respecting other living beings and have empathy
towards all creatures. If this first step is strongly established, then you
will automatically execute the following actions.
Bishnoi people of
Rajasthan, who will
sacrifice their life for
protecting animals and
nature are role models.
Address this issue
1. Chained /caged for about 13-14 hours,
2.Cannot go for natures call as per their wish
What you can do to eliminate captive animals ?
First step: Start deeply respecting other living beings. If this first step is
strongly established, then you will automatically execute the below
actions.
▪ Avoid keeping animals in captivity
▪Do not buy tickets for any entertainment show using animals
▪Approach NGOs already working in such issues for guidance
▪Influence decision makers (politicians, police, forest department,
animal welfare board, ministries, any animal owner) if they are your
friends (or) relatives.
▪Immediately react and sensitize people who own captive animals
▪Avoid buying captive animals
▪If your job is law enforcement work (politician, police, government
official, judge) then you can use your power to enforce law.
▪If you are an veterinary doctor then provide free treatment and also
sensitize government officials and people holding captive animals.
▪If you are a lawyer, then provide free legal support.
What you can do to eliminate captive animals ? Continues……
▪If you are a member of a club owning captive animals, immediately
sensitize the club management and rehabilitate the animals.
▪If you are part of media , then use the power of media to highlight the
issues.
▪Volunteer for NGOs who are working for captive animals.
▪Any skills can be used for volunteering (investigation, advocacy,
photography ,video, research, legal cases, communication skills, media
relations)
▪Provide financial /material support to remove animals in distress
▪Don’t wait for some one to do the above, start your own network of
like minded friends and start working on issues. (even if it very small
activity, that is a major change for the animal rescued)
▪Sensitize youth in schools and colleges
▪Youth -> dedicate at-least one day in a week for such social causes.
▪Regular follow-ups are extremely important for success of any project.
▪Think of new ideas to ensure the welfare of animals (see following pics)
