8. Pre-production
Director Don Hall found Big Hero 6 in a Marvel database. It was
originally a comic strip created by Marvel. It was pitched to John
Lasster as a possible production of Walt Disney Animation Studios, and
in 2012, Disney confirmed that the Marvel comic would be adapted
into a Disney movie.
In the early stages of development, the design team took a research
trip to Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. They researched
into soft robotics using inflatable vinyl which inspired Baymax’s
inflatable design.
9. Production
About ninety animators worked on the film at one point, and some worked on the
film for over 2 years. The setting of the film is San Fransokyo, which is a futuristic
mash up of San Francisco and Tokyo. To create a detailed version of San Francisco
Disney purchased the assessor data for the entire city and county of San Francisco.
A software program called Denizen was use to create over 700 distinctive
characters in the film. A rendering system called Hyperion provided illumination
possibilities, for example light shining through a translucent object.

11. Marketing
YO! Sushi teamed up with Disney in early January 2015 to create six
limited edition bento boxes inspired by Big Hero 6. As part of their
wider campaign, customers could have also won Big Hero 6
merchandise and a holiday to Japan.
Subway (In Canada), who Disney had worked with before when
marketing Guardians of the Galaxy, created a twitter contest giving
families the chance to win tickets to Big Hero 6 by using the hashtag
#SUBWAYandmovie. They also created a limited edition lunch pack for
kids inspired by Big Hero 6.
12. Marketing
Disney offered two small cameo roles of Technician 1 and Technician 2
to two UK YouTubers, Dan Howell and Phil Lester – at this time they
had a collective following of over four million people, many of whom
would have wanted to see the film to see the YouTuber’s scene.
The two posted about this on their own social media and had some of
their recording session filmed and posted to Disney’s official YouTube
channel.
This specifically targeted a teen audience as YouTube is extremely
popular with teenagers and young adults.
13. Marketing
Disney also asked US band Fall Out Boy to write a song specifically for
the film’s soundtrack, and advertised this via social media, again
targeting a teen audience. A music video for the song, titled Immortals,
was also filmed, which currently has 114,020,462 views on YouTube,
while the movie itself uses it in a main scene.
