dissemination
• .
4. Specific objective cont.….
• Describe components of research dissemination.
• Describe elements for planning to disseminate a
research.
• Describe principles in research dissemination
• Describe problems faced in research dissemination
• Explain solutions for the problems
6. INTRODUCTION
• Clinical practice requires evidence
based approach which is obtained from
research. Without research
dissemination there will be no evidence
based. In this angle of thinking research
dissemination is very important.
7. Definition of terms
Research
• Systematic process of collecting,
analyzing, and interpreting information
(data) in order to increase our
understanding of a phenomenon about
which we are interested or concerned.
8. Dissemination
• It is the targeted distribution of information,
interventions and materials to specific public health
or clinical audience.
9. Research dissemination
Research dissemination means spreading
the findings of your research to people
who can make use of them for example,
academic community to maximize the
benefits of the research without delay.
10. Types of research dissemination
Confirmation of existing knowledge
• Is the tendency of people to favor
information that confirms their existing
beliefs or hypothesis. Confirmation
happen when a person gives more
weight to evidence that could disprove
it.
11. Generation of new knowledge
• An activity in which a processor discovers knowledge
in the context of existing knowledge, resources and.
12. Spreading of new knowledge
• It involves dispersing of newly
discovered information and transfer this
generated new knowledge in an
appropriate representation to an
appropriate group of people.
13. Importance of research dissemination
• To spread knowledge and associated
evidenced based interventions.
• It ensures that the conducted research
has a social, political or economic
impact.
14. IMPORTANCE CONT….
• It draws attention of government and
stakeholders to research results and
conclusion by enhancing their visibility,
comprehension and implementation.
• It helps to create platform of making
clinical and policy decisions designed to
improve health outcomes.
15. IMPORTANCE CONT……
• It may provide option for practice to improve
communication and better patients’
outcomes.
• It help to enable proper preparedness and
response by organization and communities
that will helps safeguard lives and
livelihoods.
• .
16. IMPORTANCE CONT….
• It provides an opportunity to
communicate the results to an audience
that were not necessarily familiar with
the results.
17. Methods of disseminating a research
• Once the dissemination objective and the
audience are identified, there are a variety
of ways to share the developed content.
Regular and ongoing contact with program
partners and community members within
the service area can support dissemination
of messages.
• Common methods of dissemination include:
18. METHODS CONT…
• Publishing program or policy briefs.
• Publishing project findings in national journals
and statewide publications.
• Presenting at national conferences and
meetings of professional associations.
• Presenting program results to local community
groups and other local stakeholders.
19. METHODS CONT….
• Creating and distributing program materials,
such as flyers, guides, pamphlets and DVDs
• Creating toolkits of training materials and
curricula for other communities
• Sharing information through social media or on
an organization's website
• Summarizing findings in progress reports for
funders
20. METHODS CONT…
• Disseminating information on an
organization's website
• Discussing project activities on the local
radio
• Publishing information in the local
newspaper inform of a press release.
21. COMPONENTS OF RESEARCH
DISSEMINATION.
A research report comprises of the following
sections:
• The Acknowledgements
• The Table of Contents
• The Executive Summary
• The Background
22. COMPONETS CONT…
• The Aim & Specific Objectives
• The Subjects and Methods
• The Main Findings/Results
• The Discussion
• The Recommendations/Conclusions
• Appendices
23. Acknowledgements
• In this segment all participants’ duties
or roles are recognized and thanks are
given accordingly for making the
research successful. They comprise of
“thanks” to data collectors, funding
agencies, and your organization.
24. The Table of Contents
• This is a list of chapters and brief
explanations found on the page before
the written work. At the right side of
this page are page numbers assigned to
the content or description.
25. The Executive Summary
• This is a summary providing the
overview of the report. In brief, it
comprises of all the main points of all
that is in the report. The main findings,
methods and conclusions of the study.
This is written at the end of the report.
26. Background
• As in the proposal, a background is a
brief explanation of circumstances that
led to the creation of the report. It
briefly explains the why, where and
when the study was done. Other reports
use introduction instead of Background.
27. Aim(s)
• Indicates the purpose(s) of your report.
Specific Objectives
These are detailed objectives describing
what will be researched during the study,
as in the report
28. Subjects and Methods
• Indicates the methods used in your
research dissemination. How you found
the respondents, what problems if any
were encountered, how samples were
actually drawn, all that happened in the
field.
29. Main Findings/Results
• This is the main section of the report. It
gives an account of all that came out of
the study. Make sure that all that is in
the questionnaire is reported. All tables
and graphs are indicated in this
component.
30. Discussion
• The findings are discussed here with reference to the
objectives of the study. You discuss whether
objectives of the study were met one by one. It has
the following elements;
1. An interpretation of the results
2. discussion of the study limitations
3. Implication of the study for research and practice
31. Recommendations / Conclusions
• Based on Findings and Specific
Objectives, you recommend the course
of action and make conclusions based
on the findings. What do you think can
be done based on the findings?
32. Appendices
• All data collection instruments for
example maps, questionnaires,
Discussion guides, and any relevant
instruments used to assist in the study
that needs to be seen by the reader of
the report are attached
33. Reference
• Indicates all list of all literature you
have consulted such as books, journals
and etc.
34. Elements of a dissemination
research plan
• Things to consider when planning to
disseminate the report;
35. Objectives
• This is what you want to achieve for
example, raise awareness and
understanding or practice. Objectives
helps to know if you are successful and
made impact. Be realistic and
programmatic.
36. Audience
• Identify audience so that you will know
who you will need to influence to
maximize the uptake of your research.
Examples of audience can be patients or
clinicians . Then think who will benefit
your findings
37. Timeline
• When will disseminating activity
occur? This helps for easy planning
and management..
38. Resources
• In resource firstly consider financial that
is needed for disseminating the
research. Secondly, consider expertise
in your team or if there is a need of
addition of expertise in your team
39. Strategies
• Partners/ influencers should think about
who will engage with to amplify your
message. Involve stakeholders in
research plan from an early stage to
ensure that the evidence produced is
grounded, relevant, assessable and
useful.
40. Messaging
• Consider the main message of your
research findings. How can you frame
this so that it will resonate with your
target audience? Use the right language
and focus on the possible impact of your
research on their practice or daily life.
41. Channels
• Use the most effective ways to
communicate to your audience for
example, websites, social media and
journals.
42. Courage and frequency
• How many people are you trying to
reach? How often do you want to
communicate with them to achieve the
required impact.
43. Potential risk and sensitivities
• You need to be aware of relevant,
current, cultural and political climate.
Consider how your dissemination might
be received by different groups.
44. Principles of disseminating a research
• Do not withhold research information
intentionally for reasons of personal gains.
• Advocate for timely and transparent
dissemination of research data and findings.
• Report the results of your research accurately
including your negative findings. Negative
findings are important where findings do not
support research hypothesis.
45. PRINCIPLES CONT…
• Disclose the sponsorship and conflict
interest relating to the research.
• Obtain an informed consent from the
researcher participant when you want to
disseminate your research.
46. PROBLEMS FACED IN RESEARCH
DISSEMINATION
• Consumers lack of knowledge and skills
to assimilate practices
• Organizational dynamics undermine
staffs ability to implement and maintain
innovate approaches
47. PROBLEMS CONT…
• Data disclosure and data access
restrictions (this inhibits the ability of
investigators to disseminate information
to community members)
• Lack of resources
• Communication barrier
48. SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS
• Select topics relevant to audience’s level of
knowledge
• Always teach all findings no matter how small
it may be against the evidence of analysis
process
• Determine what resources you have available,
time, money, people, and choose a topic that
you can do justice
•
49. • Being clear and using language that a
person can understand if there is a need
translates can be used
• Use of co-authorship to share
responsibilities
50. Conclusion
• Research dissemination simply means
spreading the findings of your research to
people who can make use of them to
maximize the benefits of the research without
delay. It is very important in nursing because
it expand our knowledge. It also helps us to
generate knew knowledge that can be used in
clinical practice.
