A review meeting was recently held by the Prime Minister's Office to assess
work progress on key projects linked to infrastructure expansion at AIIMS.
This included the setting up of National Cancer Institute in Jhajjar, Haryana,
which is delayed by several months.Sources said principal secretary to the
Prime Minister, Nripendra Misra, chaired the meeting attended by Union
health secretary , AIIMS director and top officials of Haryana government. He
directed the officials to expedite the NCI project, billed as a flagship health
institute project of NDA government.
The setting up of NCI at the Jhajjar campus of All India Institute of Medical
Sciemces was cleared by the Union Cabinet in December 2013 and was to be
completed by September 2017.

However, sources said due to delay in environmental clearance and
awarding work the project may get delayed.“The schedule for starting
work on NCI has been revised thrice. Its files have been lying with the
health ministry for approval. We hope that after the direct intervention
from PMO the hurdles would be cleared so the deadline is met,“ said a
source.
A copy of the Record of Discussions (RoD) of the meeting chaired by
the principal secretary on July 11 regarding issues of AIIMS is with TOI.
The AIIMS director, Dr MC Misra, gave a presentation after which action
points were decided. This included finishing the NCI construction work
six months before the targeted date and time-bound completion of
electricity and road connectivity to the proposed facility . Brought to you by

The principal secretary to PM also reviewed work progress on expansion of the
trauma center and development of the western campus of AIIMS. It was decided
that for raising resources, the institute may consider voluntary contributions.
“AIIMS can think of bringing in private players on the Public Private Partnership
model for big projects,“ states the RoD. Cancer is emerging as a major public health
concern in India. Eleven lakh new cases are diagnosed every year and the mortality
rate is 5.5 lakh per annum. But experts say treatment facilities in the country are
lagging behind when compared to WHO standards that require a radiotherapy
machine per million population. India at present has 0.41 machines per million
population and setting up of this institute will herald a new chapter in the initiative
against cancer.
A senior doctor at AIIMS said that timely completion of NCI is necessary to cater to
the needs of patients. “Increasing hospital beds for cancer treatment is the need of
the hour. It will help lessen the deficit of tertiary cancer care in the northern
region,“ the doctor said.
