The document describes the ways in which the media product challenges conventions of real music magazines. It uses some generic conventions like mastheads and cover stories, but challenges conventions in three ways: 1) Having fewer side stories on the cover page than typical magazines, 2) Being focused on Sufi music rather than more popular genres, and 3) Using less photoshop effects than most music magazines. The document then discusses how the media product represents Sufi music artists through stereotypical imagery and stories that appeal to different social groups. It suggests distributing the magazine through large existing publications to reach a wide audience aged 13-60 interested in learning about and enjoying Sufi music.
1. Evaluation Question 1
Q1-In which ways your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media product?
2. My media text resembles a conventional music magazine. There are number of generic
codes and conventions that I have frequently followed of different music magazines.
Such as by using masthead, cover story, puffs, selling line, bar code, price, date, kicker
and sideline stories.
The theme colour of the magazine is in green's, blacks, and whites. which can be
related to Sufi music. The selling line is written just below the masthead in the same
manner it is mostly done in the conventional magazines. The price and date are
mentioned above the cover page in the corner.
In my content page I again took help of a conventional feature. I added my masthead
(logo) again to remind readers the brand of my music magazine. There has been
continuity of design in all my three pages this conventional trait is followed by many
music magazines.
Below you can an example of a music magazine and see the general codes and
conventions I followed from it.
3.
4. However I have challenged few conventions too. If you notice the cover page have
less sidelines stories compared to many conventional music magazines. I
challenged the cover page style as majority of the conventional magazine have
more stories and written text on the cover pages but I wrote less and gave more
emphasis on the main image.
Secondly I have challenged the genre. Majority of the music magazine are not
based on 'Sufi' music. They are based on pop, hip-hop, rock etc. In Pakistan I have
never come across a music magazine solely based on Sufi genre. This makes my
media product stand out amongst others.
Thirdly use of less 'photo shop' effects. Mostly music magazines are full of
different shapes, sizes, images, colour, fonts etc. I have challenged that idea and
made my product a more sober one which represents my genre. Sufi is a serious
genre and is not full of colours and style.
6. My media magazine stereotypes the typical Sufi music artist. The look of the artist on
my cover page exactly defines the stereotype of the musician's of this genre. I read
stereotyping theory in my A1 class that it is representation of people who possess few
qualities and later they are associated with those qualities.
So the artist in magazine possessed all those features that 'Sufi singers are associated
with such as long hair, wearing beads, serious and wearing black etc.
From higher management to middle management from strugglers to unemployed and
reformers everyone would like to buy this magazine because my magazine defines the
typical Sufi culture which is really popular among all type of people.
Also it has every bit of something for my target market 13-60 years old. It includes
pictures of events the majority of youth attend. It has the cover story of the artist who
was a average person but raise to fame due to his hard work so middle class or people
who dream to become famous one day can related to my artist on cover page.
They will want to know his story, as they are strugglers too. So every type of person
would like to buy this media product. It is not just for one particular social group.
7. Evaluation Question 3
Q3 What kind of media institution
might distribute your media product
and why?
8. There are many printing press companies in Pakistan but I am going to distribute it through
“THE NEWS “ or "Sunday Times". As they already sell a youth based magazine. Now I want
to introduce a music magazine to them. Which is for all ages and social groups.
They already have a huge number of loyal readers so if they launch a music magazine and
start the distribution of my magazine it will be very beneficial for my media product. The
channel of distribution is going to be from producer to distributers (THE NEWS) to
consumers.
I am going to sell my product in bookstores and coffee shops because this category in my
survey got most votes. Which shows people want the magazine to be sold over there and
secondly in Pakistan consumers buy music magazine from bookstores or coffee shops.
There is not much of a subscription system or online magazine system here. Very few
people might use this way to read magazine but majority buys in from bookstores or coffee
shops. Plus these bookstores would want to sell magazines, as they want more and more
people to come to there bookstores.
10. From ages 13-60 is my target audience. Like I said before Sufi is something which
is now a days popular around teenagers too due to coke studio plus I want
youngsters to get to know more about this amazing music genre too. I myself
being a teenager am very big fan of Sufi music. Sufi rock is the new inn thing in
youngsters due to coke studio music sessions and elders are already very fond of
Sufi music.
This age group will love to buy my magazine as it has every bit of everything. From
people who just want to learn about Sufi music to people who already know
about Sufi music. They all will enjoy reading this magazine as it covers all aspect of
Sufi music and also has stories related to international music too.
My cover story is about a music artist who was nothing before. He was not from
middle class he was a poor guy who use to sing in mazaars/darbaar’s. So to read
about this music sensation not only a very rich person would like to read it but a
very average man would like to read it too with a hope that one day he might turn
out to be something like this music star in any particular field.
My sideline story gives information about Sufi songs. So many people who just
recently start listening to this genre will like to buy this magazine too. So they get
to know more about is music genre.
12. To attract the audience for my magazine I did a survey a form of research before
making my magazine so that I know the likes and dislikes of the audience. Later I
compiled the result and kept them in my mind before constructing my magazine.
Below are the results.
In addition I put up pictures and developed the cover story that is very original
and rare something, which people want to open it and read about it. I added
interesting cover lines keeping in mind the target audience of my product.
Example 'Inside coke studio music session' (youth is part of my target market and
they literately love coke studio-music show)
In content page I included inset image of artist to grab readers eye. I personally
think the cover image is something that will attract the readers most. I took
survey before the making of my magazine so I know about the reader’s choice.
The price of my magazine is what majority of the people want.
So the price of my magazine is a very huge part to attract the audience it is
something within their budget. So everything I did in my magazine is mostly
among what the readers want. The choice I got to know about is through the
survey I took. So this is what I did to attract my consumers/audience.

18. Evaluation Question 6
Q6 what have you learn about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
19. I am a very tech savvy person so many things which I was doing during the making of my
magazine I already knew however before constructing this product I was accustomed to
take help of different software’s to edit pictures or to make some media text because I used
to find Adobe Photoshop difficult to operate but I learned how to use it in media studies
and I got very good at it . The majority of the tools I applied in photo shop were clone
brush, paintbrush, shape tool, resize tool and text tool.
I maneuver final cut pro for the making of behind the scenes video. I made a survey on
survey monkey to get first hand information. I learned how to make an online survey. I took
help of Facebook to get the audience view about my magazine.
One other thing that I learned during the making of my magazine is Photography.
I had photography classes once a week and my photography teacher used to teach us how
to take pictures and rules of photography. E.g. rule of thirds. She explained different
techniques to take pictures too. Such as pictures with depth of field. Photography helped
me a lot in my magazine and it is very important. I am very glad that now I can say I know
how to take good pictures.
I made an account on slideshare to present few of my work. Such as evaluation questions
and magazine analysis. IPhone voice memo was utilized for audio feedback of different
people. Power Point gave me access to make presentations and apply its different features
to present my work.

21. Editing video of photo shoot’s and
interviews
Using different software’s for my
media text.
22. Evaluation Question 7
Q7 Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to the full
product.
23. Looking back at my preliminary task I feel I have improved a lot photography
wise. During that time I was learning how to take pictures by the time I started
the construction of my music magazine I was not a very armature in
photography anymore. I am a better at adobe photo shop now.
My preliminary task cover page and content page looked very unprofessional
compared to my music magazine. Plus now I know what type of cover story
and sideline stories will attract the consumers also what kind of images to use
while creating a magazine and how to place the masthead, which goes with
the magazine.
I learned that masthead is the most important part of the magazine and it
show be prominent also that the price of the magazine should be mentioned.
The cover story should be given extra attention so readers know that it’s the
main story of the magazine.
The colours and font format should be according to the magazine genre. If it’s
a fashion magazine it should funky and colour and if it’s a informative
magazine it should be simple. I also learned that the magazine should have
stories according to the target audience.
