2. What is Conflict?
Conflict is dynamics between persons,
groups, or nations who perceive
another as a threat to their interests or
needs.
3. The Nature of conflict
Conflicts inflict so much pain and
negative emotions on those involved.
Reasoning is often clouded and
miscommunications occur especially at
the height of an emotional argument
when words are exchanged to inflict harm
on the other.
Conflict cycle involves “triggering events”
which is perceived as a threat by another
person.
4. Conflict Stages
According to the United Nations Economic
and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific (ESCAP) Publication on Conflict
Negotiation Skills for Youth (2003). Three
four stages of conflict that may happen
simultaneously these are the following:
1. Intrapersonal- with one self
2. Interpersonal- among two or more individuals
3. Intergroup- within the same group
4. Intergroup- between two or more groups
6. There are two responses to conflict these are the
following;
A. Flight
In flight there are three modes of behavior may occur:
a. Avoidance
-to evade or dodge the cause of the strong emotions.
a. Ignoring
-you disregard and snub his presence
a. Denying
-when someone asks you if you are quarrelling or in
disagreement with the person you are in conflict
and you disagree or repute the comment.
B.Fight
- is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to
a perceived harmful event, attack or threat to survival
8. “What Create Conflict?”
Conflicts may arise some due to these following
(Myers 2013)
Perceiving threats to own needs and interests
Miscommunication between parties
Exhibiting behaviors that are destructive to another
person’s well-being or reputation
Perceiving unjust treatment caused by another
person or entity
Disagreement over the interpretation of facts or
information
9. Causes of the Conflict
These are the five possible causes of the
conflict these are the following:
Data
Interests
Relationship
Structural ; and lastly
Values
10. Positive Effects of Conflicts
Not all conflicts result negative effect, it has also
positive effects and these are the following of some
positive result of conflicts;
Allows for issues to surface
Raises the awareness of both persons needs
Allows emotions to be expressed
Understand and accept the uniqueness and differences of
other people
Strengthens the resolve of the parties to pursue common
goals
And encourages dialogue and empowerment (Crawley
and Graham2002).
11. Negotiating through a personal Conflict
An adolescent, must remember what is need to
understand in dealing with conflict and these are the
following;
a. Understand the nature of conflict
b. Acknowledge your feeling and emotions
c. Examine your relationship with this person
d. Clarify your intentions
e. If you to keep the relationship, have a talk with the
person involved
f. Once the dialogue is accomplished to your and other
person’s mutual satisfaction then grants a
reconciliatory act.
