Management in Aviation
The airport perspective

2. In many states, a large variety of sustainability related measures is mandatory for
all firms (or at least for all firms exceeding a certain size).
In addition, in many countries there are specific regulations for airports, in
particular with respect to noise monitoring and/or financing of insulation programs
for residential buildings.
Moreover, airports (and also airlines) might use similar voluntary measures as
firms in other industries, e.g., promoting the use of public transport for employees.
The following slides focus on measures that are specific for airports.
The airport perspective 2
Introduction
3. Airports might provide financial incentives within their charging schemes,
providing an incentive for airlines to operate less noisy aircraft. Such
incentives are quite common in many (Western) European countries.
Airports might provide funding for noise insulation on a voluntary basis.
Airports might coordinate efforts between stakeholders for reducing noise
(airlines, air traffic control).

4. Scope 1 and 2: Emissions and energy consumption of the airport operator:
Airports might invest into more energy efficient equipment and promote more
energy efficient operations:
Design and use of buildings like terminals, offices, etc.
Ground handling service vehicles and other vehicles
Scope 3: Emissions along the value chain:
Airports might provide infrastructure for airlines, enabling a reduction of CO2
emissions (e.g., electricity that replaces the use of an aircraft’s auxiliary power unit
(APU)
Airports might (help to) improve public transport options for passengers (and also
employees), reducing car use for passengers’ ‘last mile’ as well as commuters

GHG emissions
5. Some principles:
• In general, the airport (like any other firm) should first identify options
for emissions reduction and assess costs of emissions reduction.
• There even might be a ‘win-win-situation’, i.e. reducing emissions
might even reduce total costs (or lead to other benefits for the airport
operator)
• Moreover, it is important to find the right organizational structure an
to involve all employees.

Environmental management
6. There are many more options for sustainability measures at an airport, e.g.
- Waste management (avoiding waste, recycling)
- Wildlife protection (e.g. animals/plants in the surrounding of the runway)
- Water (avoiding pollution, e.g. through de-icing fluids)
- …

Other options
7. Please read one or two airport sustainability reports and list the measures
that are mentioned/described in a systematic way.
