The document analyzes and summarizes different shots used in music videos. It discusses a reverse mid shot in "Somebody Else" by The 1975 that uses a mirror to show the artist's perspective. It also describes a wide shot in the same video that positions the audience in the room. Finally, it summarizes an extreme wide shot in "Follow You" by Bring Me The Horizon that focuses the audience's attention on the background action to the right of the protagonist.
2. Somebody Else- The 1975
Shot used: Reverse mid shot
I thought this shot was particularly
interesting as it used a mirror to its
advantage and it is an alternative way to
display Matty’s facial expressions. I
thought the use of this shot was effective
as it allowed the audience to get a bit
closer to the artist and almost see his
perspective without it being his direct
view. This could be symbolic to the
relationship between the band and their
fans as they put a lot of things out there
for their fans and create a relationship
with them but they don’t reveal
everything, keeping their private lives
separate.
3. Somebody Else- The 1975
Shot used: Wide shot
I thought this shot was interesting
as it is a wide shot placed at one
end of the room positioning the
audience as though they are also
in the room. The fact that the
scene is also in black and white
gives a neo noir essence to the
music video suggesting to the
audience that there is a story or
message within the song/music
video.
4. Avalanche-Bring Me The Horizon
Shot used: Birds eye view wide
shot
This birds eye view wide shot caught my
attention as the the only person in the
shot is Ollie who is placed at the centre
while the rest of the space is empty. I
found this to be particularly clever as it
could correlate to the actual song lyrics
which is about Ollie’s ADHD so by
positioning him in the centre could
suggest that it is about him and by having
the shot facing down from a birds eye
view could connotate that his ADHD
controls him.
5. Send Them Off!-Bastille
Shot used: Extreme wide shot
In my opinion, this extreme wide shot
was very interesting in terms of
lighting as the shot is very dark with a
light placed behind the character in
the centre of the hallway creating a
shadowing effect. This is very
effective as it gives the impression
that the hallway is much bigger and
almost overwhelming creating fear
amongst the audience with a creature
like character adding to this effect.
6. I Write Sins Not Tragedies-Panic! At The Disco
Shot used: Extreme close up
This shot was particularly interesting as it is an extreme close up on the characters
mouths with the intention of the audience reading the characters lips as they lip
sync. This isn’t something that you tend to find a lot in music videos when the
actual music video is a narrative which is what made it eye catching.
7. Follow You-Bring Me The Horizon
Shot used: Extreme wide shot
I found this extreme wide shot to be
intriguing as the protagonist is positioned
to the right of the screen leaving the
audience’s focus towards the centre of the
screen. This is because the action was
taking place in the background which is a
concept that is not used commonly yet it
was effective.
