1. Gered Mankowitz
The Rolling Stones – The Yardbirds Bowler Hat
This is an image of the band, The Rolling Stones, taken in the 60’s by Gered
Mankowitz. At this time the band were at the height of fame at it shows in the
confidence portrayed in the photo. This is mostly due to the camera angle as the
photographer must’ve been close to the ground creating a worms eye view shot of
the group as they look down at the lens. This gives the illusion of superiority – they
are better than the audience of the image. They’re posed in a way in which highlights
the fact that they’re together as a band, their legs are all almost interlocked and they
look comfortable in each other’s presence.
The background of the image isn’t really thought about until closer inspection as the
band take up so much of the space. When you look closer you are able to take in all
the smaller details like the people passing by as the image was taken, for instance
the man in the bowler hat who has been framed by legs right in the middle which this
photograph was named after.
Although the image of the band is clearly framed, and they knew it was being taken,
you could say that the people in the background did not know that this was being
taken; therefore it is also quite a candid photo.
2. Considering this image was taken at a time when technology was not at its finest, it
has a very high definition look. It is clear and you can take in the smaller details like
coat buttons and facial expressions which all help to create the right image.
Natural outdoor lighting would have been used as you can tell this was taken
outdoors in the middle of a street, however I cannot fully tell as it is a monochrome
image and made up of purely black, white and grey tones which are all cool tones.
I find this image interesting because even though it is taken in black and white, you
can still see all the details and it helps you to imagine what the scene in colour would
be like yourself. Overall I find it a very good portrayal of the band.
