Hard tissue
• Color – white
• Contour – normal shape

8. PALPATION
With the help of index finger tip
Palpate gingiva and tooth – feel tenderness ,location of pain, hardness
PERCUSSION
With the help of handle of instrument or index finger
Advice patient to rise his/her hand when feel pain
Percussion – vertical and horizontal
Response
+ve periodontitis
-ve normal or chronic periapical inflammation

10. MOBILITY TEST
With the help of handle of instrument or index finger
Grasp tooth from the crown and move anterior – posteriorly or mesial - distal
Grading
• 0 – no mobility or physiological mobility
• 1 – mobile up to 0.5 mm
• 2 – 0.5 to 1.5 mm
• 3 – more than 1.5 mm mobility

13. THERMAL TEST
2 Types – heat and cold test
• Heat test – perform with the help of hot air/hot water/hot gutta purcha
• Cold test – Co2 snow/ice stick
Isolate each quadrant
Stimuli on the control teeth on mesio-labial or occluso-buccal surface
Response
• No response – non vital tooth / false due to truma or calcification
• Painful response – subside when stimuli removed – reversible pulpitis
- not subside when stimuli removed – irreversible pulpitis
• Moderate response - normally
