6. Interpreting Text Task Tuesday 28th April 2020
Chapter 1 – Funeral Voices
Write your answers on paper or use a word document
Full sentences, suggest a reason, explain or give evidence to prove your answer
1. At the start of the chapter, the author writes: 'When the doorbell rings at three in the morning, it's never good news.'
Why is it never good news?
2. How old is Alex Rider?
3. What was the relationship between Alex and Ian rider?
4. What happened to Alex's parents? How old was he when this happened?
5. Who are the five people who visited the house?
6. Why do you think Alex is really upset by the death of his uncle - more so than any other nephew would be?
7. Why do you think the author has Alex say that his uncle was careful and always wore a seatbelt? What does this make
the reader think?
8. When Blunt climbed into his car at the end of the funeral, Alex noticed something unusual, what was it? Why was this
unusual?
7. Interpreting Text Task - Answers Tuesday 28th April 2020
Answers– Funeral Voices
1. The author is indicating that it is unusual to have a visitor at 3am in the morning which suggests that the person at the
door is not expected and therefore is coming with an urgent and unexpected message, which is probably bad news.
2. Alex’s age is fourteen years old.
3. Alex is the nephew of Ian rider, he is Alex’s only relation.
4. Alex’s parents had both died in a plane crash, a few weeks after Alex had been born.
5. The visitors to Alex’s house were: a lawyer; a funeral director; a vicar; a neighbour from across the road and a man from
the bank where Ian Rider worked.
6. Most people do not live with their uncle so the loss of an uncle is different. As Alex’s parents had died when he was only
a few weeks old, his uncle Ian Rider had been the closest person to Alex throughout his life so losing Ian was not like losing
an uncle, Alex’s future was also uncertain as he did not know who would look after him now.
7. The information about the seatbelt introduces an element of mystery and suspense about the death of Ian Rider, Alex is
challenging the information he has been given and this encourages the reader to begin to question the circumstances fo
the death.
8. At the end of the funeral Alex noticed that the driver of Blunt’s car was carrying a gun, this increased Alex’s suspicion
about the man, Bank managers do not usually have drivers who carry guns!

10. TUESDAY SCIENCE
Living things and their habitats is our science topic.
WORMS
Remember the characteristics of living things are MRS GREN – look for evidence for each characteristic:
Move, Respire, Sensitivity, Grow, Reproduce, Excrete, & Nutrition
Learn about worms:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-zc_1vjLnI
Find some worms outside
Cover a piece of mud or grassy area (grassy area will need to be left for a week before looking for worm holes)
with a brick, slab of concrete or piece of plastic
Leave for a couple of days – lift the covering & look for worm holes
You can try this too:
Get an empty milk carton
Ask an adult to make some holes in the lid
Add 10 drops of washing-up liquid and a cup of water
Shake the bottle so you get lots of bubbles
Use the lid as a watering can & pour the bubbles & water on a small area of the ground
Watch carefully as the worms come to the surface
