Issue 3
2015
Delving deeper into the strategies for increasing the “buyability” of your services and skills as
a professional consulting hypnotist (see last week’s Focus newsletter, issue 2 ) always
includes the critical step of increasing your visibility.
In 1991, the world consisted of one website; by 2014, there were roughly a billion sites. The
greater the quantity of quality information that is available online, the more people use the web
as their top of the mind, go-to resource. The downside is obviously, that you, as a small
business, sole practitioner, or individual striving to make your services visible to new and
existing clients can get lost in the vast sea of information now available via the World Wide
Web.
In order to stand out in the crowd, you must establish and maintain a website that is readily
found by the people who are searching for information about the topics you know best and the
types of services you offer. Because roughly 65 to 75 percent of all web users rely on Google, if
you want to be seen by prospective clients, you must ensure that Google both sees your site
2. Page 2
and likes what it sees on the site.
Much has been written about how
website owners can (and should)
make their websites “user friendly”
these overviews often forget the
critical first step of making your
website “Google friendly.”
WHY IS GOOGLE-FRIENDLINESS
SO IMPORTANT?
Think of Google as the librarian for
the vast amount of content
available online. The librarian must
have a way to sort, organize, and
parse information so that when a
web user searches for words, a
name, or a phrase, Google can
quickly return a list of websites
that Google sees as offering high
quality information that is
specifically relevant to the phrases
or terms the user searched.
In order to provide web users with
the best results, Google uses an
algorithm to rank and organize the
websites it searches. Although the
formula behind the algorithm has
never been released as public
information, the list that follows
helps you understand some of the
qualities Google values in
determining which sites it will
“value” and push to the top of the
search results it offers users.

Getting Google to index your site is simple. Log in to your Google
account and then go to this link and submit your URL when you
have made updates that you think will have a beneficial impact
on how Google ranks your site:

FACTORS THAT FEED INTO THE GOOGLE ALGORITHM
The following list comes directly from Google. While it relates to past algorithmic
adjustments, and additional updates to the algorithm have been made since this list was
released, the factors listed here are still as relevant as ever and show you a snippet of the
many factors that contribute to website page rank.
Would you trust the information presented in this article?
Is this article written by an expert or enthusiast who knows the topic well, or is it more shallow in nature?
Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant articles on the same or similar topics with slightly
different keyword variations?
Would you be comfortable giving your credit card information to this site?
Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual errors?
Are the topics driven by genuine interests of readers of the site, or does the site generate content by
attempting to guess what might rank well in search engines?
Does the article provide original content or information, original reporting, original research, or original
analysis?
Does the page provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?
How much quality control is done on content?
Does the article describe both sides of a story?
Is the site a recognized authority on its topic?
Is the content mass-produced by or outsourced to a large number of creators, or spread across a large
network of sites, so that individual pages or sites don’t get as much attention or care?
Was the article edited well, or does it appear sloppy or hastily produced?
For a health related query, would you trust information from this site?
Would you recognize this site as an authoritative source when mentioned by name?
Does this article provide a complete or comprehensive description of the topic?
Does this article contain insightful analysis or interesting information that is beyond obvious?
Is this the sort of page you’d want to bookmark, share with a friend, or recommend?
Does this article have an excessive amount of ads that distract from or interfere with the main content?
Would you expect to see this article in a printed magazine, encyclopedia or book?
Are the articles short, unsubstantial, or otherwise lacking in helpful specifics?
Are the pages produced with great care and attention to detail vs. less attention to detail?
Would users complain when they see pages from this site?

MOBILE FRIENDLY: WEBSITES DESIGNED TO FUNCTION WELL ON MOBILE DEVICES,
(SUCH AS PHONES AND TABLETS) ACCOMMODATING THE SMALLER SCREENS AND
NEED FOR NAVIGATION VIA A KEYPAD VERSUS KEYBOARD AND MOUSE NAVIGATION
TYPICALLY AVAILABLE ON A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP COMPUTER.
On April 21, 2015, Google adjusted its algorithm to begin favoring mobile friendly websites.
Unlike Google’s treatment of previous adjustments, the move to favoring mobile friendly
sites over otherwise comparable sites that were not mobile friendly was announced and
widely publicized in advance of the change.
—Google wanted you to update your website to improve the user experience for mobile
visitors and it wanted to give you adequate time to make the adjustments before it
implemented changes to its ranking criteria (the algorithm).
If you have not already checked to see how your website currently appears and functions
to mobile viewers, and how Google categorizes your site’s mobile friendliness, your first
step is to log on to the Google WebMasters Tools Page (link below) and test your website:

Many sites that perform well for desktop visitors, however, do not get the same glowing
report for performance via mobile devices. Here is an example:
Although this sample site shown above has many challenges, the website owner—through
the process of permitting Google to analyze the site—now has a blueprint for what areas of
the website need to be improved, as well as, important guidance on how to make the
improvements.
In 2014, web access via mobile surpassed web access via desktop computers. In other
words, we have reached and now passed the tipping point… mobile is the new reality. If
you have not already evaluated your website’s mobile friendliness, move that project
higher on your to-do list. VISIBILITY MATTERS.
Grow your brand. Grow your business. Commit to increasing your visibility:
With a well-maintained, mobile friendly website.
By sharing comments and info on other websites and social media platforms.
By actively participating in NGH programs, including webinars, teleseminars, training,
conferences, and at the most prestigious professional education and networking event
