With the 2015 NGH Convention now less than a
month away, you are no doubt making
preparations for the time you will spend at this
very special event. From planning which
sessions you will attend and which old friends
and colleagues you want to be sure to see, your
time at each NGH Convention is both jam-
packed and precious.
But when you think about it, your time every
day is precious. How you spend each minute of
each day defines how you spend your life.
Your real “LIFE” is not the vision you anticipate
for the future, but is instead, the reality you
experience right now. Victor Hugo wrote, “He
who every morning plans the transaction of the
day and follows out that plan, carries a thread
that will guide him through the maze of the most
busy life. But where no plan is laid, where the
disposal of time is surrendered merely to the
chance of incidence, chaos will soon reign.”

In your professional capacity, you spend much of your time helping others. Because you are a
loving spouse/child/parent/sibling or friend, you also spend much of your personal time
assisting, caregiving, or in other ways helping other people. But who helps you? Who watches
over you, has your back, and is your caregiver when you need a helping hand?
For many of us, the scales are out of balance as we give more, do more, serve more, and
provide more for others than we receive ourselves. In doing so, we put ourselves at great risk of
facing burn-out, fatigue, illness, sadness, or any of a number of challenges.
Here is a list of 5 small steps you can take in your own life to help you stay energized and
focused on living each day as fully as possible while keeping your eye on the prize—the goals
you truly want to achieve in life.
1) Know which activities in your day generate the highest levels of return and reward. Focus on
ensuring that you accomplish these above all others. Think of time like money and then
spend it wisely.
2) Visualize your future. Understand your goals and keep them in front of you, striving toward
them in ways that are measurable and for which you must be accountable to yourself and
others.
3) Give yourself permission to say “no” as often as you need to, thereby creating for yourself
less pressure and more personal time, space, and control. Say no to projects and people
who offer little in return or who drain your time, energy, and passion.
4) Say “yes” to more sleep, more fresh air and sunshine, more quiet time, more time with your
peers and professionals, and more fun. You are more likely to achieve your goals when you
are at your personal best, not when you are dragging your exhausted self through life.
5) Celebrate. Celebrate your successes and your failures for they are a great source of
experiential learning. Identify the experiences that bring you joy and use them as a reason to
rejoice.
