Artificial Lift: what & why
Artificial lift is a process used on oil wells to increase pressure
within the reservoir and encourage oil to the surface. When the
natural drive energy of the reservoir is not strong enough to push
the oil to the surface, artificial lift is employed to recover more
production.
Why Artificial Lift?
• When the production reaches the limit of 10bbl/day (commonly
known as stripper wells).
• The reservoir pressure gets declined.

SRP (Sucker Rod Pump)
Beam pumping, or the sucker-rod lift method, is the oldest and most
widely used type of artificial lift method.
It is made up of several components, some of which operate
aboveground and other parts of which operate underground, down in
the well.

Advantages of SRP
• High energy efficiency.
• Simple, rugged equipment.
• Easy automation if prime mover is electric. •
High salvage value of the surface equipment.
Unsuitable Conditions
• High viscous oil.
• Inclined well bore.
• Sandy crude oil production.
• High GOR wells.
• Greater well depth.

Introduction
• The oldest and most widely used artificial lifting method of the oil
wells is the sucker rod pumping.
• Most of the stripper wells use sucker rod pumping.
• It is possible to lift 1000bbl/day from the depth of about 7000ft and
200bbl/day from the depth of 14000ft by SRP.
• Presence of H2S hampers the depth by increasing from 4000ft to
10000ft.
Types of pump
• Casing pump.
• Tubing pump.
• Rod pump with traveling barrel. •
Rod pump with stationary barrel.
