for the controlled
assessment?
Todays Objectives
 WALT
 How are films accessed by an audience?
 How films are scheduled?
 What is censorship and certification?
 WILF

methods of exhibition.
 Understand and be able to apply film scheduling to your
movie, understand why this is important.
 Identify what the BBFC is?
Exhibition
 Where can you see movies?
 What is the difference between the two cinemas on
the next screen?
 Consider what types of films they are showing and
why they are different?

Cinema - 2Cinema - 1
Exhibition
 Where was your film shown?
 There are Four main types of cinemas:
 Multiplexes – big outside town centres – Cineworld / StarCity
 Mainstream cinemas – In or out of town - Odean
 Independent – privately owned Electric Cinemas
 Art houses – show foreign films – Light-house

 Why was it shown there?
Programming / Schedule
 Films are released at certain times for a reason. Look
at the films when would these films have been
released and why?
Programming / Schedule
 Things the distributors will consider when releasing:
 Is there competition at the time? – Direct related to
genre.
 Festive dates / holidays – Why?
 Other movies that have been successful previously?
 Where to release to appeal to audience.
Schedule
 When releasing a film things to consider have other
similar movies been successful? Genre appeal –
especially within subgenres is very important in
marketing.
 If not it could get a straight release to BLURAY / DVD /
Digital download.
 Star appeal will be important to this?
 Can you name any stars that now only make straight to
DVD movies.
Schedules
 If a film was successful and the genre has got
unpopular the movie sequels might then go straight
to DVD.
Straight to DVD
Cinema released.
Cinema released.
3D Exhibition
 3D projection – this has become very important to
profits as it can generate huge amounts of profit for
studios.
 3D screening is done in stereoscopic, two images on the screen ever so
slightly offset brought together by glasses to create the illusion of depth.
 Pirates of the Caribbean – strangers tide made the
most profit but was watched by the least audience –
this was possible due to the 3D screening.
 Fourth film only one made in 3D.
3D
 Was your film released in 3D, this could affect where
it would be screened and which cinemas?
 Was it filmed in 3D?
 Was it converted into 3D?
 Avatar created the modern version of 3D, James
Cameron had the cameras created for that film?
British Board of Film Classification
The BBFC is the regulatory
body that certificates each film
released in the UK.
(BBFC) is an independent, non-
governmental body funded
through the fees it charges to those
who submit films and video works
for classification. Here, and
throughout the Guidelines, video
works are taken to include video
games, and films and programmes
released on DVD or Blu-ray, or
distributed by means of download
or streaming on the internet.

British Board of Film Classification
 For a film to pass for release often cuts are required to
achieve certificate.
 Kick Ass – was considered for 18 rather than 15 due to
language.
 Serbian Film – 49 cuts across 11 scenes.
 The Human Centipede 2 – banned / rejected for
certificate, several scenes removed.
 Women in Black – uncut – however received the most
complaints that year due to scaring young children taken
in with parents.
Homework
 Research on exhibition.
 Find out where you film was released what types of cinemas,
find out number of screens opened on, worldwide distribution
how much profit it made.
 Was it released in 3D, was it filmed or converted? What impact
did this have?
 When was the film released, why? Were there holidays or
festivities consider America as well, like Thanksgiving is a
major holiday.
 BBFC – What certificate did it receive and why? Did they
enforce changes to the film?
