A01 – CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT
INDUSTRY RESEARCH
Starter

Name three important
job roles in film
production.
Lesson Overview
 Period 1 – Controlled Assessment
 Starter – Analyse the example scene and grade the example in
groups. Feedback to the class.
 Complete first draft of the controlled assessment – 1 hour
 Period 2
 A01 – industry Research
 Element 1 - Production
Todays Objectives
 WALT
 How films are produced, how film ideas are generated?
 What is importance of cast crew in film production?
 How are movies funded – differences in funding avenues.
 WILF
 Apply ideas generation to the movie you have selected.
 Identify the type of film you are researching and the avenues
that were available for film production.
 List important crew roles that you will need to research.
Screening
 Saving Private Ryan


Opening Scene



When watching the scene consider which of the areas you would
analyse for this film and why?
Mise-en-scene
 Cinematography
 Sound
 Editing




Feedback to the group on your opinion.
Task 1
 Use the grading criteria on the board to mark this

controlled assessment.
 You will begin working on A02 today.
 In groups read the analysis.

 Grade the analysis using the grading criteria.

 This is the same criteria I will use to mark your work.
 You have fifteen minutes and then you will

feedback your findings.
Controlled Assessment –
A02 – MICRO ANALYSIS
 Mise-

- ne - setting, costume &
props, lighting/colour, performance, gesture &
body language
 Cinematography – framing, camera angles and
movement, shot size, focus
 Sound - diegetic and non-diegetic, parallel and
contrapuntal, sound bridges, ambient sound and
sound effects
 Editing – types of edits, pace of editing and special
effects.
Controlled Assessment – A02
 Include:




Title of the film
Start time of your scene
Finish time of your scene

 You will then select TWO from options and analyse

the film and how it creates meaning for the audience
using these two areas only.
 You have one hour to complete this task
A01 – Industry Research
 This assessment is divided into three areas:
 Production – how the film got

made, funded, importance of crew/stars and where
ideas come from?
 Distribution – how the film is marketed to raise
awareness.
 Exhibition – How do the audience access the film?
Production
 This is the are we will be exploring in the lesson

today.

 In groups


Where might the idea of a film come from?



You have ten minutes then feedback some ideas.
Twilight
 Adapted from a , Stephanie Meyer
 This movie was extremely popular and due to the

popularity can you name other adaptions and similar
films that were produced because of the success.
 Five minutes consider and feedback.
List
 HOST
 Vampire High
 Hunger Games
 Mortal Instruments
 Beautiful Creatures
 I am sure there are more.
Idea Generation
 Films want ideas and concepts they believe to be

bankable.

 Books – popular books and similar to previous success

can include comic books as well.

 They may also look at genres to see what is doing well

and mimic these films so as to capitalise from their
success.

 Franchise – they may also be looking for films which

would allow for a franchise to be created.
Job Roles
 What are the important job roles in a film

 On your tables make a list of who you would consider

to be important job roles and why?
Job Roles






Director
Producer
Writer ( story and screenplay)
Cinematographer
Composer

 You should identify at least who did these job roles on

the film you have selected.
 Use either the credits at the end of the film or
alternatively


www.imdb.com
IMDB
 If I were to research Dark knight using IMDB, I

could find the all the following information.
Cast
 You will also need to identify the cast
Funding
 How was the movie funded.
 Hollywood films are paid for by a studio, which will

then sell distribution rights for the film or distribute
it themselves.
 You can find this information on IMDB as well.

 Who paid for it and how much?
A01 Production - Example
 Film: Toy Story

Year: 1995

 Production Details:
 Toy Story is an American Computer-animated film. Its was the first film ever to

entirely made by computer generated imagery as well as being the first Pixar /
Disney film to be made. The film was directed by John Lasseter and produced by
Ralph Guggenheim and Bonnie Arnold. Peter Docter, John Lasseter, Andrew
Stanton and Joe Ranft were the story writers. Editing was done by Robert Gordon
and Lee Unkrich and music by Randy Newman. Billy Crystal was originally set to
play the voice of “Buzz Lightyear” but declined. Toy Story starred Tom Hanks, Tim
Allen and Don Rockets who played voices of the 3 main characters “Woody” “Buzz
Lightyear” and Mr. Potato Head”.

 The Oscar winning short film Tin Toy was among the works that gained Disney’s

attention. After meetings Pixar pitched a television special called a Tin Toy
Christmas. By July 1991 Pixar and Disney signed an agreement to work on a film,
based on the Tin Toy characters, naming it Toy Story.
Homework
 Complete all research on the production area which

should cover all areas discussed:





Ideas Generation
Key cast and crew
Production details – developments through production
Funding

 You can do this through print screens, bullet point

notes lists however you choose.
 These must be notes not detailed paragraphs, these
would have to be removed.
