1. 1. In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. Looking at my music video and how I used and
challenged some generic conventions of real
music videos. The way I have obviously
challenged conventions of a generic music video
is through my use of stop motion, even though
there are other music videos that have used this
style to create a music video for example:
Coldplay – Strawberry Swing and Her Morning
Elegance –Oren Lavie. The differences between
their music video and mine though are through
their use of location/background and characters.
Theirs include real people whereas mine use
figurines of people, and don’t have realistic
features from face to movement unlike theirs.
3. The generic conventions I have included in my music video is through
the use of a title and end screen for my video to show what the song is
called and who it is by and then the end scene to show the end of the
song and video. This could be called breaking conventions as well
through it is becoming less common to use a title and end screen but I
thought it was appropriate for the style and genre of music.
4. Comparing my digipak to real products it does match many of the
conventions though how I have labelled the artist and album name
onto the spine, so when it is on a shelf it can be easily read. I also
think deciding on only having sections is a generic convention on a
digipak as many more have 3 instead of 4, as 4 sections is more for
the special releases and gives you more for your money.
5. The conventions I have challenged though my
digipak and advert are through that I haven’t
included many live photos of people or
surrounding, on my digipak I have, on 2
sections, but I have used the paint splatter art
work, created by myself, to brand my digipak.
Looking at a recent artists album cover, Ed
Sheeran, he created his new album cover
divide on Damien hirst’s spin table. But this
style of the artist creating the album cover is
very new and very rare but I wanted to do this
as it creates a more personal touch to the
digipak, and shows I care about the product.
6. I feel like I have been very simple
with my magazine advert but I
think that is what makes
magazine adverts effective the
less writing, means less to read
for the audience, I just put the
information that I need on it.
Even though it is simple, you will
notice it when flicking through a
magazine because of the bright
colours I have used and contrast
to each other.
7. The genre of my music is between indie and folk which gives
many conventions that I could of included. The main conventions
I broke looking at the genre of my music was the location, as I
created this in a studio with a white background there was no
location, which is important in this type of genre. If you
stereotypically think of a folk song they are outside and are either
doing a live performance or are including a dance scene that then
becomes the iconography of the song.
8. My song does include a dance section but it is not as effective as other
music videos. Developed on the idea of the colours that some of the
videos I researched included using the example of Compass by Lady
Antebellum in the video there was a lot of colour and movement, I
want to create this but not making contrast too much to the rest of the
video, bringing in a colour changing lightbulb allowed me to do this,
having the figures move around the shot as the lightbulb changed also
allowed me to create the fast pace of a dance scene.
9. My magazine advert and digipak do
link to my music through their
simplicity but also do match the genre
but may break conventions of other
products of the same genre. I feel like
this genre with products include a lot
of location images and conceptual
images. Through my paint splatters I
show conceptual elements but I have
only one location shot, if I wanted to
follow the generic convention of my
genre for my products I need more
location shots to show off.
10. My music video clearly has a narrative
and the lyrics help this, this is what I
wanted to create the idea that the song
is telling a story and the video is there to
help visualise it. But also the video is
there to interpret in your own way.
There is a clear journey through the
song and the story moves forward, the
video doesn’t show any flashbacks or
future events as it is just a continuous
story that changes, there are clear
scenes where time has moved on.
11. The representation that I highlighted on in my music video is about
relationships. Especially modern day through the lyrics you pick up
on basic issues many relationships have but are exaggerated
through the lyrics and has a circular narrative through how they
always come back to one thing. As many relationships do nowadays.
12. The codes and conventions of the layout of a music video, the layout of a
music video is very unique to the idea you are creating, as mine is mainly
narrative based, I followed many conventions related to narrative based
products. For example an introduction that introduces the characters
and establishes a background to them, then the main events happen,
something bad normally happens that makes them go off the original
course, then a resolution happens, meaning they either solve what has
happened or have found out how to go around it and then last a
conclusion normally a happy ending. In my music video I followed the
idea at the beginning of an establishment on what this was going to be
about, but with a song it’s hard to bring something bad in the middle due
to the chorus, but through the movement and lyrics it helped show the
audience that the characters were having ‘problems’. Which then came
clear in the ending through the iconic sofa that had been there the whole
time was covered implying that what they had, had ended, which brought
the video all together.
13. The codes and conventions of the
layout of a digipak are 6 sections fold
to make a 3 faced cd case. As the
layout shows, it has labelled sides
with what they should have on it. I
have broken this by I haven’t
included any images of the artist, this
is because I haven’t included them in
my video. All the other main
conventions including a barcode,
record label information, where the
cd will go and a track list I have
included. Without these main codes,
the product wouldn’t function and
the audience would be confused at
what they were getting and would
have no information to explore more.
14. I don’t think there are any conventions on
how you can layout a magazine advert of
albums, but normally the album image is
also the image for the magazine advert, I
have broken this convention. I decided to
exaggerate the album cover art and create
a new piece for the magazine advert by
using more colours and making it more
visually interesting. I have included the
album title and the main song of the
album which is the one I have created a
music video for, as many of the adverts
show, the advertise the most well known
song on the album.
