1. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary task?
The main purpose for our digipak and magazine advert- our ancillary task is to
support our main media product, which is the music video. This therefore
supports the artist and thus, creates a brand identity. I decided to keep a sense
of simplicity throughout my three tasks. This is because I believe that gives a
feeling of realness to the product, as there aren’t any gimmicks that can take
away from the product itself. I centered both my ancillary tasks on clouded
scenery. This imagery immediately creates a sense of despondency or nostalgia
which is the main theme presented in my video. This however does prove some
challenges and positive because it creates a sense of ambiguity. It create some
challenges as it will become a little harder for audiences to read the theme,
however it lets people create the own interpretation giving artistic freedom.
A Digipak and Advert are key way in promoting an artist or album. This can be
done in a variety of ways to really capture who the artist is or wants to be. It also
gives audiences a chance to receive exclusive and heartfelt content that
sometimes you do not get with online copy. This is represented by the use of
acknowledgements, which can be found within the Digipak. The use of lyric
books and the feeling of authenticity with owning a digipak can convince
audiences to purchase the product.
Unlike, the real artist, I chose to not include the artist in any of the visuals. This
began when I decided to not include a main ‘artist’ in the video and not having
any performance element. I believed that it would disrupt the theme of sadness,
if the audience had someone performing to them rather than allowing them to
interpret and develop the story themselves. This led to exclusion of the artist
within my advert and digipak. Comparing to the original artist who often uses
their appearance on their advertisement, I wanted to rely on enigma to entice
audiences and this flowed throughout all three media texts.
The dark undertones I decided to interpret the song as could easily be
highlighted throughout the three tasks. The song often discusses the things that
the artist is jealous of about his partner, such a being happy without him. I
decided to take a spin on this and use it as an elderly man, jealous that his wife
has found peace in heaven. This creates a sense of real life scenarios, that
audiences or someone they know can relate to. This is why for the images for all
my digipak, advert and the locations within the video are places that could be
found very close by. This subtle link creates that idea of truthfulness to the
audience in my digipak, advert and music video.
The song I decided to choose was very slow tempo and emotional, the song had
no gimmicks or tricks such as a base drop or synthetic instruments, therefore
this should be the same for all three texts. I chose to use simple fonts and
colours. I was also very conscience to make sure that the important elements
stood out for example the name of the artist and the feature song I chose.
