AS Magazine CREATIVE
CRITICAL REFLECTION
Analysis
HOW DOES MY MAGAZINE USE
AND CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS
• COVER PAGE
Like most magazines I have used a close up model to present the
model the audience like most teenage magazines as they can see
am targeting a mature teenage audience and not just recent teens.
• Another convention decided to accommodate was the title being
the dominant font as it captures the audiences attention and
they can relate with being called rebel.
• As you will see I used another convention based on male
magazines as I used a few subtitles like the magazine with the
teenage male models unlike the female magazine on the cover
the female model is covered with many more cover lines.
• However unlike most magazines my cover is not as colourful
regardless of sex, teenage magazines tend to be colourful
probably to get the audiences attention but mine lacks the colour
because the audience should be mature enough and rebel and
take something different.
• Also the use of a barcode to represent authenticity.
CONTETS PAGE
• Most magazines gives emphasis on the content page as it is the
magazine in short explanation.
• With conventions like the editors note giving the audience a
relaxing reading mood.
• And finally as the picture shows I have numbered the page as it
helps the reader know where to find what he or she wants.
HOW DOES IT REPRESENT SOCIAL
GROUPS?
• The masthead I have used represent the target audience I am
targeting as they are referred to rebels as they do not conform
with societies rules though it does not apply to everyone in the
18-26 years they are mostly stereotyped as rebels.
• Also the cover lines I have used are a few compared with other
teenage magazines but this is only because am I targeting both
male and female audience so I used cover lines referring to both
genders.
• The audience being targeting is the upper class and middle class
older teenagers as they can afford a luxury of a magazine
through allowances or gifts hence the cheap price tag.
• The use of the puff to capture the audiences attention by offering
them a free poster inside the magazine being places right at the
masthead for them to see it easily.
HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT
ENGAGE WITH THE AUDIENCE
Below the masthead there is a tagline that at glace shows what
audience am targeting ‘Dedicated to teenagers’
Also the font I have used is a youthful
font and has no place in an elderly
Magazine.
Like most magazine I have put the
contents masthead without a lot fancy
things as it is important the audience
easily find the contents page as it helps
them find what they need to know about
the magazines
Also in the double cover spread page I
have used a font that the audience am
targeting can relate to as it is a funky
font.
• With trying to avoid looking bias my cover lines target both male
and female audience as the cover page and the contents page are
the first thing they see when they purchase the magazine and
they quickly see it a magazine for both genders as they are
matters dealing with music, environment, partying ands drugs.
HOW WOULD IT BE DISTRIBUTED
AS REAL MEDIA TEXT
• Being an informative entertainment magazine with a lot of space
for advertising and a wide market due to its audience it could be
well represented with the better established media organisations
such as Hearst or Bauer Media which have an extensive media
portfolio and will easily market the magazine due to its
intelligence in the market and already market base with Hearst
already representing seventeen to good house keeping with a
global establishment.
HOW DID YOUR PRODUCTION SKILLS
DEVELOP THROUGHOUT THE
PROJECT
• With proper research and planning before production it helped
me not waste time deciding on choosing on whatever aspect
using only Photoshop for the whole of my AS to design my
photos.
• Not having any previous knowledge of Photoshop I watched
videos on YouTube and followed their guidelines experimenting
on images before starting having learnt to use tools such as the
lasso tool, red eye remover and crop tool which helped increase
the aestheticism of the image to the audience.
HOW DID YOU INTERGRATE
TECHNOLOGIES
SOFTWARE AND ONLINE
• Having explained earlier only needing Photoshop to design all three
lay outs of the cover page, contents page and double spread page it was
the only software I needed and used however online devices were
heavily used such as
• YouTube
This is where I learnt all my editing techniques which helped me create
my magazine as there were many tutorial videos that greatly helped.
• Blogger
This site was a great help as it served as my folder to keep all my files of
research, planning and production online which helped me in case I lost
any data and needed any reference
• Also using google as a search engine to find information as it was
my secondary research method.
• Finally my last online tool was slide share as it helped me keep
my written information online as a presentation tool and
reference device.
HARDWARE
• Without any of my these two devices my project would have been
impossible, my laptop and a borrowed camera from my friend as
my camera was with my mother at the time and she was abroad.
• Needing only the camera and the laptop was used for creating all
content that I helped take with the camera, using the
software(Photoshop), Only needing to connect the camera to the
laptop to receive the photos through USB transfer. Also used my
laptop as for my secondary research, using google.
