An assistant professor at Texas Christian University with a teaching focus on business journalism and the media, Melita Garza holds membership with and supports the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ).

2. Introduction
 Melita Garza is a Harvard University graduate who earned her PhD
in journalism from the University of North Carolina in 2012. An
assistant professor at Texas Christian University with a teaching
focus on business journalism and the media, Melita Garza holds
membership with and supports the National Association of Hispanic
Journalists (NAHJ).
The NAHJ awards scholarships to prospective Latino journalists in
the United States and Puerto Rico. Since 1988, the not-for-profit
organization has awarded close to $1.6 million to over 700 high
school, undergraduate, and graduate students. NAHJ is offering
three scholarship programs in 2017.
1. Ruben Salazar Scholarship Fund: Established in 1986 in honor
of the acclaimed Latino journalist who was killed while covering an
anti-Vietnam war rally in 1970, this fund awards scholarships to
students seeking careers in journalism.

3. National Association of Hispanic
Journalists
 2. Maria Elena Salinas Scholarship: Created by
NAHJ founding member Maria Elena Salinas in 2002,
these scholarships are awarded to aspiring Spanish-
language journalists.
3. Hortencia Zavala Scholarship: This is a first-year,
$5,000 scholarship named after the grandmother of
Hugo Balta, ESPN Deportes Senior Director of
Hispanic Initiatives and former NAHJ president.
In addition to demonstrating academic achievement
and financial need, scholarship applicants are also
required to show an understanding of the Latino
community and a commitment to the field of
journalism.
