The "one size fits all" approach to Project Leadership is inherently flawed. Practitioners have found that the two primary attributes of uncertainty and complexity of a project provide guidance to effective project leadership and governance. Complexity includes project composition such as team size and criticality, while uncertainty includes both market and technical uncertainty. The approach and leadership style required for a simple, stable project is quite different than what is required for highly uncertain, highly complex projects. The Self Selecting Organisation - Total Squadification at Trade Me

Inspired by Spotify's squads and Atlassian's Fedex day we let 90 people choose what they wanted to work on and who they wanted to work with. Through telling the story of Trade Me, New Zealand's biggest ecommerce platform, we will demonstrate how good leadership can inspire and empower people using a scalable self-selection process along with a vision for an exciting picture of the future. Flying in the face of conventional wisdom and traditional management practices a middle manager and an Agile coach didn't ask for permission, and removed significant obstacles and constraints to successfully form 18 self-chosen, fully skilled squads. In this session we will show how we facilitated self-organisation on a scale we don't believe has been done before, what we had to go through to convince people that this was a good idea, how we learned how to visualise the process and dealt with brilliant people as well as a few difficult ones! We will describe how we had the exciting opportunity to observe and partake in a social experiment where people made decisions on the fly and stayed true to our values of being trusted, straight up and to grow great people. All Agile teams self-organise but we took the principles to a whole other level and created the self-organising organisation.

Diffy : Automatic Testing of Microservices @ Twitter

Agile development has become a norm nowadays. Though it fosters faster product development cycles, it often results in a higher number of functional and/or performance regressions. In an SOA setting such as Twitter, such regressions may cascade from one service to one or more services. Detecting such regressions manually is not practically feasible in light of the hundreds of services and tens of thousands of metrics each service collects. To this end, we developed a novel tool called Diffy to automatically detect such regressions. The key highlights of the talk are the following: A simple yet effective approach for detecting functional regressions. False positives are minimized via statistical analysis of metrics obtained from a tuple <primary,> of nodes, where the same traffic is sent to each node. An ensemble approach to performance regression. The need for an ensemble of classifiers stemmed from the multifaceted characteristics of the performance data. In order to minimize the impact of variability of hardware performance across nodes, we used two clusters – instead of a tuple of nodes – corresponding to the release candidate and production code. The approach is robust against the presence of anomalies in the performance data. The proposed techniques work well with minute data. Diffy has been in use in production by multiple services at Twitter, and has been baked into the continuous build process so as to actively detect functional and/or performance regressions. We shall take the audience through how the techniques are being used at Twitter with REAL data.

Life is too short to learn from just our own mistakes – we have to learn from others’ mistakes as well. In this session, Dipesh will be drawing upon more than a decade of Agile experiences in multiple organizations across nine countries to share stories and challenges of transitioning into an Agile Leader, while also focusing on what we in the Agile community are struggling with most. There has been a lot written about techniques for creating great Agile teams. We dreamt of a future where our whole department embraced TDD. A future where the quality of our code and the product was elevated. We had the best intentions, however, this story does NOT have a happy ending. Learn from my experience working with the leaders of a department of 40 to attempt 100% TDD adoption. I will contrast this with our successful adoption and spread of SOLID design practices, and look at what we would have done differently with our TDD advocacy if we were to repeat it. Some of our lessons learned: Don't try to mandate TDD, bring in outside experts, and refactoring skills are key.

"The higher you go in an organization, the more your suggestions become interpreted as orders." - Marshall Goldsmith An Architect garners a high level of authority by being an expert. People will follow their lead. But what if the Architect is wrong? They will follow right off a cliff. In the book "Turn the Ship Around", David Marquet tells his story as Captain of the US submarine the Sante Fe. On January 21, 1999, Marquet gave an order that could not be carried out, but the crew tried anyway. When he asked why, they responded "Because you told me to". After this incident, Marquet vowed to never give another order. Instead he replaced it with intent. Instead of asking for permission, his crew would tell him what they intend to do. Marquet took his first steps to get his crew to start thinking like the Captain. How do we get people to think like the Architect? Use the principles of Intent-Based Leadership to decouple the success of your project from the personality of the architect. By creating clarity around architectural goals and by engaging people in problem solving rather than defining rules and standards we can divest control and create an organization of leaders.

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
