Representing Social Groups in Media
1. Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2. Representation In our title sequence we have represented young girls. The girls are displayed in a rather stereo-typical way. They are all white, slim and young.
3. Stereo-Type The girls were shown in a stereo-typical way, we showed that they were young, teen girls by showing them getting ready. Putting on their make-up and using their phones.
4. Challenging stereo-types We did challenge the stereo-type slightly with our outcast character. As she was actually the main character, but she was the outcast. But she still slightly fits the stereo-type of being a slim and white female.
5. Genre Marker The stereo-types are a genre marker. They indicate to the audience what type of film they are going to watch. The genre is based around the stereo-type, for example a chick flick is usually based around young females.
6. Dominant Ideology Dominant Ideology = The dominant ideology, in Marxist theory, is the set of common values and beliefs shared by most people in a given society, framing how the majority think about a range of topics Our title sequence does support dominant ideology in some ways. The girls are concerned about their appearance. They are all friends going out, when they are getting ready they apply their make up and get dressed. But we do challenge the dominant ideology slightly with our outcast character. The outcast challenges this as she is a sympathetic character as she is not the most glamorous and she doesn’t try as hard to look good.
7. Media Language We communicate what the characters are like through many things. E.g. The female costume, the make up, the bedroom, the products they use. So overall the mise-en-scene plays a big part in showing the audience what our characters are like. The sound is a fast paced song, as they are young girls we felt the fast music suited the title sequence. On the other hand we used things around us to make the titles, this is not really found in chick flicks. It would usually be used in more indie films, for example Napoleon Dynamite. But we felt that it made our titles more interesting and the things we used were female items.
